GM player comes with reaper?
I am considering reaper after sonar was sold... does it have a GM player or some vsti's to play midi tracks I import? Sorry if this has been asked thousands of times. Thanks.

Hi Paresh, welcome. No, it doesn't, but I think it's a good thing. There are loads of free GM playing VSTs and other vst instruments out there. Try www.kvraudio.com (under the product search) for starters. Also http://vst4free.com. As far as specifically General Midi, there are free sample players that will load general midi banks of various formats. For example, Plogue's sforzando
https://www.plogue.com/products/sforzando.html)
and the TX16Wx plugin
https://www.tx16wx.com
both free will do this. So search for and download any GM bank in their standard formats that they take (TX16Wx will load nearly any non-proprietary format out there).

for quick & dirty, the Yamaha mentioned by bobobo is indeed very workable.

Or you can visit the software link in my signature (it's a topic here on the forum) to grab some very nice instruments (and if wanted also FX) for absolutely free

+1 to technogremlin's free software suggestions thread..
I was going to recommend that thread! Only reason I didn't suggest that was I wasn't sure if the OPs MIDI files did something special like, say, use channel 10 for drums and therefore require a little bit of manual work to get to work with non general MIDI VSTis. At any rate, there are a lot of free synths available and that link in techno's siggy is a good start.

I do admit we don't have a nice (preferably 64bit) free GM-player on the list... yet.
Might need to start digging around if there is such a beast
@nait, thanks for the supporting vote.

Paresh, I noticed this GM sf2 mentioned over on KVR.
http://wusik.com/download/CrisisGMSF2.zip
I checked it out and it seems very good. At 1.70 gig it's probably big enough to crash the freebie players. But if you take the full sf2 file and convert it out to separate instruments (they'll still reference the whole file but then will only load that instrument into the player) it should work better. I opened it into sforzano, which converted it into separate sfz instruments and loaded them fine. Then you can make a template of the instruments you want over a bunch of midi channels instead of having every single GM sound loaded, which works ok with a 5 meg GM file, not so much with one like this
