Thinking about coming back to Reaper. Need some help with shortcuts etc
The title says it all.
Coming from Pro tools and just dipping my toe in the water to see what its like to be back again
I have a lot of things set up already (actions).
Right now, i'm missing a feature and want to know if its possible at all to get it.
In pro tools, you can press cmd+mouse click (i forget if its right or left mouse - muscle memory), on any mix parameter in the edit window (pan, send amount, level etc), and it will show that particular edit lane in the edit window. Can that be done?
That goes for pretty much all plugins etc.
Is there a way to just touch a specific parameter on the screen and display that parameters automation lane?
And regarding automation lanes (envelopes in reaper language). Is there a tool to easily mark and edit the selection like in the link.
https://streamable.com/xv9tr
Thanks a lot It looks promising already!

The answer to the first question: change global/track automation to non-Read(Trim/Read, Read) mode and touch(click and drag your mouse a bit) any parameter.
Regarding second question: assign action
"Time selection: Set time selection to items"
to any shortcut or create a button on any toolbar, select an item, run the action and when you move your cursor to an envelope and see double arrow,
hold Ctrl+Shift(Windows) and drag your mouse up/down.

Great. Thanks a lot.
There is no way to select the item and set the time selection to that item, by double clicking on the item, only?

By default the 'Set time selection to items' Action is assigned to the Shift Modifier of the [Media item] [double click] Mouse Modifier: https://www.reaper.fm/videos.php#H0hSqZ-EVgI
Keep in mind that there's also a [Media item bottom half] [double click] Mouse Modifier in case you want to assign different behaviors to double clicking on the top or bottom half of an Item: https://www.reaper.fm/videos.php#5bDrFFY7yc0

Sure you can. You can use any mouse modifier you want. If you still want to use double click, I avise you to use not Media item, but Media item bottom half context in Mouse modifiers, so you'll have top part for something else.
The short instruction:
1. Choose what I've chosen.
2. To change "Default action" modifier click on it and choose "Action list..." from the list and then select that action.
3. ???
4. Profit

Ok....
Was editing an hours worth of dialogue (for a computer game). Hade acustica audios JADE inserted along with some fabfilter eq and desser.
In pro tools, having that inserted alone, at buffer 1024 on a pretty powerful gaming laptop, resulted in max cpu. I could barely run the session (the Jade plugin caused that, might not be fully optimized as its the first version).
I had to export every single voice line as a new file with XXXX_01, and XXXX_02 etc. Had to do that all by hand.
Then thought, this is taking SOOOO LONG! I'll give reaper a go and work on setting up stuff for 15 min and see where I am at.
Now everything behaves pretty much like pro tools, except for its amazing rendering selections, where you it automatically renders each item with fx applied and it can auto generate all the right names/numbers.
Saves me SO MUCH TIME!
Absolutely amazing. I'll be using reaper for this kind of work from now on.
Will take some more experimentation before I will use it for sound design and trailer work as well, but it looks very promising.
Thanks a lot for all the tips and tricks!
Looks like I will be getting a "new" computer that is about twice as fast, by just using reaper instead of pro tools.

Yes -- after wiggling a parameter, you can click the "Param" button and choose "Show track envelope" or "Show in track controls" (the latter for a knob on the track as opposed to an automation lane). If it didn't auto-detect the desired parameter, just go Param -> FX parameter list -> etc. There is also an action you can link to a hotkey: "FX: Show/hide track envelope for last touched FX parameter".
Regarding the envelope editing: if you are just wanting to change the volume of the item, you don't have to bother with an envelope; just drag down the volume of the item (using the bar at the top of the item). (Shift-drag to make it go over 0 dBFS). If you just want to change the volume envelope for a certain region, it's not necessary to split that region into its own item; you can select the time selection, and then use the hotkey combo to "move envelope segment" which I believe is shift-ctrl-drag on the segment inside the time selection -- drag it up/down.
Just some ideas.

You should read the chapter about Preferences in the User guide to setting up everything as you want. It is really important to get maximum performance from your computer.

Sure (see pic below); you really should acquaint yourself with the mouse modifiers section of the prefs. This kind of stuff and so much more is available in there. And of course the actions menu. And if you really want to dial your workflow, get in to the SWS extensions. That said, I do like to make as few changes to defaults as possible, just because it helps when using other people's systems. That said, reaper does make it super easy to export/import prefs, or (my strong preference) you can just use a portable install on a USB stick with your entire configuration (see my signature for portable install details -- super easy.)

Ok, one more thing, as of now, when i have an item (item A) on the timeline, say at 10 minutes and copy an item (item B) and insert it on the timeline before the other item (item A) (say at 9 minutes), it is as if there is inserted extra time on the timeline and item A is moved accordingly.
How can i just copy and paste without inserting time?
I have tried macros, but it always inserts time.
Thanks
EDIT: found out I had enabled ripple editing by mistake

I'm really starting to get the workflow tweaked now. So many cool things, and I hope to ditch pro tools soon
I have been making friends with the actions menu and mouse modifiers and have change alot of settings.
Still some things though:
A:
Is there a way to differentiate between scroll up and down?
It seems that in the actions menu, it can only detect scroll. Not what direction you are scrolling..
Would like to tweak item gain with the scroll wheel. Up for+gain down for -gain.
B:
Is there a way to copy the space after/before an item (along with the item) and paste this?
I cant seem to find a way to do this.
Say I have an item on a track and i mark that along with 4 seconds of silenece (no item) behind the item itself.
When I paste it, I want the silence/blank space to be pasted as well.
Thanks a lot!

I don't think so. Are you aware that you can just click and drag the volume line in the item to do the same thing? (hold shift to go above 0 dBFS). Or you could assign whatever mouse modifier to whatever part of the item to adjust volume (e.g. left drag in the bottom half of the item.)

You are "marking" it with the time selection? How is the left edge of this selection defined?
There might be some existing SWS option for this... I think this falls in to "area selection" and someone will hopefully chime in. Not my thing. :-) Otherwise you might end up needing to make a script request in the appropriate forum. But I bet there's some kind of solution already.

Yes, I know of the drag from top thing. Works great, but sometimes it can be finicky to find the spot where the cursor changes from normal to gain change. Plus i'm used to the mouse wheel scroll thing.
It's not a biggie, but would be nice to have.
Can you grab the mouse wheel direction in reascript? Maybe that could be a thing (I know nothing about scripting by the way).
Regarding marking: I mark with the marquee tool. And timeselection follows where i drag (thats my workflow). I just want to be able to copy empty space before and after the item. Basically I want to copy everything highlighted by the marquee tool+the time selection.
Thanks

Maybe try out the "bottom half of media item" context and set left drag to volume adjustment... it's much easier to hit the spot (it's half of the entire item, after all) and you can go over 0 dBFS without holding shift (and go as loud as you like, not limited to +6 dBFS).

I think so. I'd ask over in the script subforum if anyone could whip up a volume adjustment script. Once you're used to the process of installing/activating them, they're not scary.

Here's a custom action which does that.
SWS: Save selected item(s)
Item: Unselect all items
Item: Select item under mouse cursor
Action: Skip next action if CC parameter <0/mid
Xenakios/SWS: Nudge item volume down
Action: Skip next action if CC parameter >0/mid
Xenakios/SWS: Nudge item volume up
SWS: Restore saved selected item(s)
Then add a shortcut for this action in the Actions list. In this case, you can simply move the mousewheel in the Keyboard/MIDI/OSC Input window to set it as a shortcut. Unless you want to override an existing shortcut assignment, you'll also have to add a different modifier key for this mousewheel shortcut...press the modifier key(s) while moving the wheel to do that.

Ok. Copied from the link. Pasted it into a new reascript and got an error:
ItemVolumeScrolling_01.lua:2: ')' expected (to close '(' at line 1) near '?'
I think I will be getting more errors once I get past this one. i'm assuming all the red letters (not shown here, but in reascript) are errors.
Help pretty please

Ah! Thanks!
This is freaking awesome. It works!
I just found out some other things about Reaper (some mixer view stuff that I really needed). I simply cant believe how powerful this DAW is.
It's like a modular daw.
I love the music aspect of things, but also the technical part, so it's perfect. Whenever I don't work on actual audio projects, I can geek around with the tech side of the DAW.
Thanks again

You could try smart copy. By default the shortcut for it is CTRL+Shift+C. If you plan on pasting the copied item & space in between some other items, you might wanna turn on ripple editing from the main toolbar. Then make a time selection which covers the space and the item you want to copy. Select the item, CTRL+Shift+C, move the cursor where you want to paste, CTRL+V.

Ok. Another one
Snapping.
I want to momentarily disable snapping when holding down ctrl. So I'm looking for a way do "holding down". Not "pressing".
I can easily make a hotkey for enabling snap and then another for disabling snap.
But have it be disable while pressing a key?
Maybe this is a script thing again? Could someone maybe point me in the right direction?
Once I am satisfied with all my settings, I'll post them in a thread so other can benefit from all my silly questions
Thanks

With a modifier key pressed:
Moving items without snapping.
Selecting timeline without snapping.
Place the playback head without snapping.
And guess what, I have all these down
BUT! The last thing is pressing the same key that I use to disable snapping to also click an item and hold down the a key (the same as used to disable snap) and click on the timeline somewhere else and the item will go to that position.
Would love that last thing and thought it would even able if there was an easy way to just globally disable snap instead of disabling snap on individual actions.
But if it cant be done, i will live without that last shortcut.
Maybe that’s where a script comes in (globally disable snap while pressing down a key).

Ok. A thing that has been bugging me. Maybe it can be tweaked, but I havent found a way:
If I have and item on the timeline and do a fade in on the left side of the item, and then decide to trim the left side of the item, the fade still has the same length. I would like it not to.
Lets say I have a fade on the left side of the item of 10 seconds.
The total lenght of the item is 20 seconds.
I decide to trim down the left side of the item by 9 seconds. The fade jumps and is still 9 seconds long. I would like it to be only 1 second long.
Basically I want to trim not only the item, but also the fade.
Makes sense?
Thanks

Not possible with built-in features.
The same can say about the previous question, where you needed no snapping.

I would make a custom action that does:
Code:
Custom: split items delete left
Item: Split items at edit cursor (select left)
Item: Remove items
I would enable "Consolidate undo points" and "show in actions menu" and assign a hotkey to it. Then you just position your cursor where you like and hit the key (making sure the item is selected). Works for multiple items, too.

Tried it. It just deletes the fade I have created all together (along with trimming the left side of the item). The fade is not maintained. But thanks for the suggestion
