Proper noise reduction software - by which I mean really effective at reducing noise without messing too much with the original audio - is not available free. A noise gate is a far more simple thing - think of it as a switch turning on or off the audio depending on the signal.

Good stuff you guys. Thanks a million. I just need to learn how to cypher the offending frequency I guess or just tweak until I find it.

what kind of noise do you want to remove?
Can you post an audio snippet (stashbox.org)?

Just the normal buzz and hum frequencies you get when you use a 1/2 inch cord. I plug my bass, guitar and keyboard into a 4 channel radio shack mixer the runs into my input channel into my PC.

I've tried ReaFir, but I'm not quite sure if it's working or not.

You can try this:
- put ReaFir in subtract mode, edit mode: precise
- check 'automatically build noise profile'
- loop a part of your audio file which contains _only_the_noise_ you want to remove and no audio you want to keep. Some seconds are good.
- play the loop until the red line has settled.
- stop playback
- uncheck 'automatically build noise profile'
- play your audiofile normally, the noise should be gone
- if the noise removal affects the audio signal too much, you can move the red line down by holding CTRL and dragging it with your mouse. This way the audio signal gets better again but also the noise comes back the more you drag the line downwards.
Maybe you have to experiment a bit, but removing static noise with reafir normally works fine.
You also may consider rerecording your audio track(s) using a less noisy source.

Try Audacity, its free, and imho a great piece of software. It has a noise removal tool. This tool asks you for a segment in your audio with the noise, and afther that it removes the ofending frequencies. I use it a lot.

Cheers!

Thank you! I appreciate the info. I was hoping to be able to do EVERYTHING in Reaper, I don't want to commit DAW Adultery. Now the noise remover in Audacity, is it a Lame or nyquist plugin? If so I might be able to just rape the noise removal software from audicity and use it in reaper

Just wanted to quickly say thanks for this thread!
I get all manner of interference from my crappy amp, probably not helped by the fact the wiring in this house is dodgy! While this obviously isn't a perfect fix, its pretty damn close, cheers!
