White Pussy's BSF
Hello
Here’s a new mini-EP I produced and mixed. I already put it online, but I’m still curious if you have any more feedback and tips for me. De-essing, for example, was something I just couldn’t get right (using TB Sibalance and item volume envelope).
Other tools used include:
- Soundtoys' Little Altrboy, EchoBoy, Crystallizer
- XLN RC20
- Eventide Ultrachannel
- BiasFX
- SynthMaster One
- Audio Assault HeadCrusher
- TAL-Reverb-4
- Izotope Ozone 8
- Valhalla SuperMassive
Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/album/1gTfY...RHm9n86vnDx1DQ
Soundcloud: https://soundcloud.com/whitecat-music/sets/bs-f

Don't forget to follow if you like.

Can't really comment on the mixing because I am listening on super cheap phones, but just wanted to say that these are really nice songs.
The WP name really doesn't suit the material I must say. I expected 80's glam rock .

Is that what Spotify calls "open"?
Need yet another account to listen to a song. Sad...

It wouldn't let me listen without signing up.

Tickled by the title, I went to listen but... I found out it's Spotify. I'm not signing up, free or not. Maybe upload some tracks somewhere else for maximum reach - at least temporarily?

Yeah, I will add that I already had spotify, so not a big deal here, but if I didn't have it, I also would not have signed up to have a listen.

I'm not sure anybody could get all his sibilance out of his singing style...it's sounds like he is singing constantly in his head voice and he's staying on the "S" sound a long time. The singer gives a good emotional performance but needs a little technique to be able to sing with less essing. I would put a ribbon mic in front of him with a good pop filter next time and I bet you still would have sibilance to deal with. I'm not huge on the reverby vocal sound but doesn't mean it's not right, the songs are good and the playing is nice. I like vocals to be a little clearer and in front and it sounds like the guitar is in front. It's hard to make out what he's saying on a lot of lines especially listening on laptop speakers but also on my DT770's. On the Bose speaker I will say that the vocals stay more in front but on laptop speakers and headphones not as much. Overall I think you did a fine job mixing, on a tough song, and gave him the product he wanted most likely which is all you can do.
I had a drummer record in my studio one time and he asked why is my hi-hat so loud and my answer was....because you played it that loud. His sibilance is there because he's singing like that. Without awesome technique and practice Bono would be the most annoying singer ever to listen to with all the air sounds he puts out. Nice job mixing on good tunes, I don't comment unless I like the music.

Strange. I reckoned everyone could listen to everything on Spotify with a free account, but with advertisements in between.
Anyway, here's a Soundcloud link: https://soundcloud.com/whitecat-music
Thanks for the feedback so far!

People still need to register for a free account, that's the thing.

I listened to the first 2 tracks on SoundCloud: Big Seams and Felicia. After listening, I agree with @kindafishy that the artist's name is misleading
Disclaimer - My sarcasm doesn't imply disrespect. It's the way I would talk to a friend in real life. Difference is they know me and know I mean no harm. My sneer is meant to encourage.
Big Seams
The song itself is alright, but some things about the final product don't resonate with me.
- The FX and levels make it feel like the singer, being a White Pussy, wants to hide. Being there only a guitar to hide behind, the singer is forced to bandpass the voice, go further back in the room (how far? Well, 2.5+ sec reverb far), and finally ask the engineer to turn the fader down. Don't the lyrics deserve listening?
- The arrangement has little development. The music itself is based on a simple repetitive structure, so some orchestration/arrangement variation could help build interest. Alternatively, lyrics that cut through could help.
- The voice itself is good, an americana-style tenor without too much rock hype. I like it, but it doesn't shine too much hidden as it is.
Felicia
I like this better. The singing sounds more varied, as does the arrangement. Less angst and more sophistication in the music. The melancholic, distant whistling helps paint an atmosphere.
An unsubtle level and ambience change comes after that. I'd try to make it a little more gradual. The ending sounds a little abrupt, as if the song is incomplete. Which can be good as in "let them wanting more!". Next number should begin at least mezzoforte!

Thanks for the feedback and taking the time to listen Juan.
It's definitely true that I'm still struggling to get the balance between guitars and vocals right. On every song. Maybe it also has something to do with listening to my own voice, which is still awkward sometimes.
And yes, 'White Pussy' is just clickbait for 'White Cat'

I think Juan R nailed it. Lots of potential but the vocal just feels distant in a way that could be a pleasant effect but it doesn't really work. Sounds like you're holding back and that can sound a bit twee after a while. Like I say plenty of potential. Cheers
