Ha, well if I told you I've had the song idea for about 10 years, and music for the idea for at least 3 years....would that change your mind?

I just realized I've made things doubly hard on myself...I'm intending to do the REAPER mixing contest this month and that's due in on the 21st...so I'm going to have to work on that during the week AND work on my track as well...

Heheh, so is it forever finished now or you wanna give yourself one more month to obsess over every detail until you start to wonder if you're just making it worse?

Both are hard deadlines, so it's going to be a "good enough" type situation...luckily I don't get that obsessive over a mix (when it's not my track)...I have a system for mixing and when it's done it's DONE...

I also have another four old ones I want to get done, but on another day.
Wow. we ended up getting good takes on 3 of the 4 new songs and a couple of oldies, but I did discover something interesting. If you sing into a valve mic (like my Rode Classic 1) DO NOT use a metal screeen pop shield. My mike started hissing and burbling after about five songs & we finally decided it was down to moisture going THROUGH the pop shield and getting on the capsule. When I got it home I took the valve out & cleaned its pins and the socket, put the mike into its box with silica gel bag to dry it out & the next day all was well. Taking my nylon mesh pop shield next time!

The bad news: I wont receive the stems for overdubs and subsequent mixing for a couple of weeks!
But we were all very pleased with the outcome and cant wait to do more.
FWIW the studio has a decent live room and a huge control room, choice of Pro Tools HD or a 24 track 2" tape machine. Yamaha S10, biggish Adams and a lovely pair of wall-inset Tannoy mains. We sounded great through the mains!

One song a month sounds like a my tempo. Just with two month breaks between those. I'll be thinking about subscribing to the next edition.

Your month can start any day. It's all up to you.

I actually had a hard time sleeping last night because I'm worrying about this deadline I made for myself. It actually feels a bit more tangible this time, since I know I'll become a slippery slope for the other procrasters here to slide down if I fail...

*sigh*

All right, I planted a seed, three "chords"(?) made with some dodgy Casio synth VST I found:

https://soundcloud.com/zeekat/ida-ra...hase-0/s-pnpuT

I'll try to grow it into a tune, lets call it "Ida Random" for now (actual person with an awesome name, found it in the credits to "Silverado" I watched on Netflix the other day). I'll aim at something not-heavy, with mostly clean guitars, may come in handy for the next "ambient" playlist. And yeah, mono leads. Needs mono leads.

I wonder how well it will go. I'm really good at abandoning projects. We will see on aug 26th.

Will it be considered cheating if I post another tune other than the one I specified earlier?
I have a couple of others that are nearer completion than Raining in my Heart!

Yea why not? The pirate game I was working on already fell apart, so I don't have much inclination to finish a pirate song now that I'm no longer being paid. I've got a lot of stuff that's close though, so I still think I can make it with something else...yea I think just finishing something is enough.

My limited understanding of blues rock tells me it's sounds rather good!

I have four bars now, sounds like a middle part, now to add something sounding like a beginning. Invested in a sampled old (c)rusty drumkit specifically for this project, now have to figure out how to passably mix in it, it's full of huge boomy sounds.

Good job, jelloman. I'd never heard that song before, but I think I like your version better. It's less country and more ZZ Top.

Most importantly...you finished! Congratulations, I updated your entry.

Thanks! I'll take any comparisons to ZZ Top!

Default Is this still open?

I never take part in these challenges.

I'm not a procrastinator as much as a, "I recorded a first take, some guitar, some bass, some midi drums, some vocals, started to EQ, and... oooh.. I wrote a new song and its my new favorite and I recorded a first take, some guitar, some bass, some.... oooh I wrote a new song and its my new favorite and I recorded a first take, some guitar, some bass...." (wash, rinse, repeat).

And I feel everyone mixes better than I am capable of... and and and (insert whatever fear most people cannot believe I have - in most of my life I have confidence bordering on arrogance...)

And so... is this still open? If so, I'm in.

If so, I'll pick one of my mostly unrecorded songs and commit. If not, I will still commit.

All about that commitment... I have 3 days left and I still can't quite commit to which one I wanna complete... I'm the best (worst) procrastinator.

Well, I have two days left as well and I hope whichever tune I post will not sound too silly next to the efforts sent by all you experimental types. Rank amateur is my job description.

My current version is 1:44 long, has a beginning and is still heavily under construction(deep research into mixing sampled Latvian 1980s floor tom). Also not very experimental, I'm as pedestrian as ever.

Default This morning's start

Chronic insomnia means I rarely make it to 4am. So, I got up, recorded 4 takes on guitar, 2 on vocals. I do have a bass line but barely.

Decision Road is a song I wrote in 2009 after my divorce from my first wife. Challenging time but a lot of decent songs came out of that time. ;-)
https://matthewmoranonline.com/decis...-reaper-forum/

I'll post updates when I make progress. Currently, I have one guitar track panned hard left, one hard right, and vocals centered. I am putting notes on the page about plans and progress.

Well, rough and ready, but here it is. Not really finished, bags and bags of room for improvement both in terms of performance and mixing but I did commit myself to sending a tune by this deadline, so brace yourselves.

Sorry but it won't upload. It is an mp3 file. I zipped but still failed.
Any ideas ?

Well done! You'll have to use dropbox or google drive or something and link it. Big files can't be attached directly to posts. PM me for my email address if you can't manage.

That's a good use of insomnia. Me, I don't even try to sleep until I can't keep my eyes open. Otherwise I'm just tossing and turning, getting more and more worried about how little sleep I'm going to get.

I think I completed the composition stage and have the scratch tracks now. Now retracking and the turd polishing phase.

My problem is I can't avoid changing and adding things to the arrangement when I start re-tracking the scratch parts. Sometimes that's good though because the song gets better. But everything I pull out to "finish" seems to need a lot of work and I keep changing my mind.

I might just focus on mixing a short loop tonite best I can because I'm not even close with anything else and today's the day...

Default Procrastinasty

Well I failed. Gonna try again this month to finish something tho. Part of the problem was I started a song for a job that ended halfway through and I lost all motivation to finish. The other part is I'm a hardcore procrastinator and pretty unlikely to finish a thing...

But don't let that discourage you guys. Don't be a procraster like me. Be a master.
