@bevoss
what is the relation between video files and ringtones? I am ignorant but I am interested to explore. I thought ringtones were usually either midi files or .aac?
@everyone
what are the alternative locations to place the FFmpeg files besides the root installation folder (alongside reaper.exe)? Can I put it in 'Plugins'?
(I would personally prefer a folder called FFmpeg, either in the root installation, or inside Plugins folder.)

Your're right. MOV extension seems to work.

From what I gathered here recently: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MPEG-4_...ile_extensions
.mov is the Quicktime container format, mpeg-4 is essentially identical to that, plus supports extra mpeg features...it can contain both audio and video streams
.m4r is an audio only mp4, and is the only format iTunes recognizes as ringtones more importantly!
I must admit I thought the whole ringtone thing was pretty gay, until I got an iPhone...making your own in Reaper rocks! Honestly I think mp4 should have its own drop-down menu for m4r/m4a/m4b etc, I would be surprised if Cockos didnt pick up some business solely from kids wanting a decent ringtone maker, not to mention audiobooks.

Does anyone have a definitive word on the current most stable, reliable and efficient video format to use for REAPER under Windows 7?

I'm on Win x64.
Usable for me so far were Quicktime Mov Photojpeg, MJpegA, DV, H264(without picture reordering selected if possible as it slows down seeking a bit more), AVI XVid, Divx, DV, MJpeg.
All with FFMPeg. Works fine here so far.

That's a pretty comprehensive list Airon
I'm about to try some of these on my studio rig under Win7 64 / REAPER 64 (3.46pre1).

Any chance for a lossless video output codec?
http://forum.cockos.com/project.php?issueid=2384
DONE (3.46pre3)
Also it would be nice to encode to original source video size and framerate without the need to enter the correct values. Could be done via two checkboxes or so ...

Just converted a large video (MP4 at 1916x1040px) to AVI XviD 4096kbps -> worked perfectly (more than 2 hours rendering time). Needed to do this because MPC-HC couldn't read that file past 1h15min. VirtualDub can't open MP4 so REAPER was my only alternative.
Now for such tasks it would be nice to have a lossless codec available so you don't loose quality ...

A request has been posted to include render profiles, or presets. It's a discussion in the FR forum only so far, but if we don't have an FR in the issue tracker for this, we should consider posting one.

I did a test of exporting avi (original video is xvid codec) , worked first time at mp4 @ 24.00 fps, then I tried changing the export format to match source frame rate (which is 29.97) and resolution size, then subsequently every export (every available output format) I try crashed with "not rendering, ETA infinity" . I'll try again and update with more details. Anyone else encountered this ?

Open up the Quicktime Mov file with the Quicktime Player, or VLC. That'll get you the precise information the developers need to at least test a file like that to trace this possible bug. The Quicktime Player gives you detailed information on the file in the Movie INspector in the Windows menu. VLC has this in the Media Information panel (CTRL+I) in the Codec Details tab.
Quick alternatives for these kinds of details are the free tools GSpot and MediaInfo.

Nice...
Video Codec: avc1
Audio Codec: sowt
1080
30fps
44.1, 16bit Stereo Audio
I imported this file, and it came up, but the video playback window was black, and a couple seconds after hitting play, Reaper crashed.

This might belong here...
An option to only show the video window in projects that actually have video items?
This is to enhance running an audio and video project in parallel multiprojectsync style...in fact just running a video tab long with audio only tabs as well.
Currently running an audio tab and a video tab synced, you have to keep changing the screenset or toggling the video window when switching.
Cheers!

What's your audio output buffer size settings? Are you using ASIO or DirectSound/WaveOut?

Using Asio on RME FF400. Buffer size isn't having any affect on it. It's at 48 samples now, which is plenty, but even if it's at 256 (which is colossal for this computer/RME), it acts the same. Also, if I install ffdshowx64 the playback works beautifully. When I uninstall ffdshow and let ffmpeg do it, it hangs. Note that the audio actually continues just fine. Just the video is wrecked up.

I can confirm this. Especially during peak building (I guess this needs lower priority) and when skipping backwards in the video. With ffdshow decoding it doesn't happen.
The video in my test was
Code:
Length: 1:43:05.643

Christophe: Thanks for the fixes and lossless codecs in pre3! Working fine.
Here an Aspect ratio problem:
This video doesn't look right in REAPER. It's stretched vertically (too high):
Code:
General
Format : AVI
Format/Info : Audio Video Interleave
File size : 1.03 GiB
Duration : 1h 53mn
Overall bit rate : 1 293 Kbps

Display aspect ratio : 16:9
Frame rate : 25.000 fps
Standard : PAL
Resolution : 8 bits
Colorimetry : 4:2:0
Scan type : Progressive
Bits/(Pixel*Frame) : 0.105
Stream size : 884 MiB (84%)
Code:
Length: 1:53:37.159
Video: 720x576@25.00fps, Aspect=1.00, Decoding format=RGB
Audio: 48000Hz 2ch 16bps
Using FFmpeg DLL decoder v52.61.0 (--enable-shared --disable-static --enable-memalign-hack --cross-prefix=i686-mingw32- --cc=ccache-i686-mingw32-gcc --arch=i686 --target-os=mingw32 --enable-runtime-cpudetect --enable-avisynth --enable-gpl --enable-version3 --enable-bzlib --enable-libgsm --enable-libfaad --enable-pthreads --enable-libvorbis --enable-libtheora --enable-libspeex --enable-libmp3lame --enable-libopenjpeg --enable-libxvid --enable-libschroedinger --enable-libx264 --enable-libopencore_amrwb --enable-libopencore_amrnb)
Video: h264, yuv420p, 720x576 [PAR 64:45 DAR 16:9]
In Media Player Classic Homecinema (via ffdshow) it's looking right (at "Default" aspect ratio setting). Ffdshow says SAR 1/1, DAR 5/4.
Looks like REAPER isn't applying Display Aspect ratio? Looks like VirtualDub's "source aspect ratio" view. When re-encoding the video to the same size, the display aspect ratio isn't written properly. Or not read correctly by other applications.
This is what I'm getting from REAPER's re-encoded file:
Code:
General
Format : AVI
Format/Info : Audio Video Interleave
File size : 68.2 MiB
Duration : 33s 600ms
Overall bit rate : 17.0 Mbps

OK, I got everything working in Reaper 32 but why is there no "Show Video Window" choice in the View drop-down menu in Reaper x64?????? I don't get it.

Yes indeed. This reminds me of a lonely thread I started a while back regarding a couple of video feature requests: http://forum.cockos.com/showthread.php?t=21380
Any development here would be most gratefully received.

What's the status of this now? Still alpha? Here on XP Pro 2GB memory it just eats all the memory and crashes when I try to load the kind of video I work with (full high def stuff in various formats). I'll post more detail if it's supposed to work but if it needs special hardware I'll drop out.

We could do with some more detailed tests in this direction. More to come from me too.

I just tried it with DVD-spec video and that too caused the memory to disappear as soon as I tried to do anything with it with ffmpeg enabled. I'm getting more of a result with ffmpeg off for editing and on for render. Hmmm... I'd be interested to know what the design intent is here - is this aimed at serious video production or just low res non-serious stuff? Personally I like the concept of basic video editing with proper audio editing, as it's too often the other way round, so I'll certainly keep an eye on where this is going.

The point here isn't video editing at all, as I understand it. Strictly audio sync-to-picture and rudimentary layback of audio to video media. The devil is in the details of being able to accurately and quickly/immediately sync the video to the proper frame during seek/scrub/playback/loop.
Am I misunderstanding the goal here? I may be totally off...

Yeah, I've already reported this here: http://forum.cockos.com/showpost.php...4&postcount=31
Don't know why REAPER uses so much memory for it.

Can somebody tell me why my 32 bit Reaper has a "Show Video Window" under the View menu and the 64 bit Reaper does not?
My videos play fine under 32 bit Reaper and ZERO under 64 bit Reaper. I get the "Can't import media item" error box.
I'm asking this ALL OVER THE FORUM and get zero answers... It's like my posts are invisible or something.... it's getting VERY frustrating.

I'm sure one of the devs will probably chime in at some point, but right now it's 2am at Cockos HQ.
