Default How do I get my hi-hat to choke?

I found a 2 bar fill in EZ Drummer that has a hi-hat which is choked. So when you hear the hi-hat being hit, the sound is being immediately stopped afterwards so there is no ringing.

I would like to get that same sound in another fill which I'm experimenting with. So I looked at the Note Properties of the original fill and I saw this under length for Hats Open Max:

1/640T

I don't really know what that means but that's what it says. So I opened up the fill I'm experimenting with and I placed the hi-hat where I wanted it and under Note Properties I typed:

1/640T

But for some reason when I listen to the fill, the hi-hat is not being choked. You can clearly hear the sound ringing afterwards. So why is this and how do I get the sound to choke?

Default How to:

Hey 357!

The note length and properties aren't entirely what you're after. Think of it as a "real" drum kit - you need to use the pedal to close the hat.

In your MIDI editor, after an open hat, put a note in the "Hats Pedal Click" (if you're using the note namer plugin or have mapped your own note names) in the correct time position in the MIDI editor for the choke.

Like This:

See that the Hat is fully open, and then the Hats Pedal Click note closes it - just like a real kit. Just adjust the pedal click to give you the right timing for the choke, and that's it!

Does that make better sense to ya?

Thanks for the info. But is it called Hats Pedal Click or Hats Pedal Chick?

What do women have to do with it anyway?

They wear hats, of course.

Do you want to choke an open HH or do you want a short HH sound?
If you want a short HH sound choose 'closed HH'.

hehe!

I'm certain it was just a spelling error.

Did it work out for you? If not - Blechi made a good suggestion too.

Good luck!

The sound is called 'HH Pedal Chick' or 'Chick Sound' because that's exactly what it sounds like, when you step on the HH Pedal to close the cymbals with the proper speed and leave it closed. There is no stick involved, when producing this sound.
Don't confuse this with closing the HH with the pedal after hitting it when (full or less) open, what gives a completely different sound.

Thanks! I never knew that!

A drummer I am not. But, I can fake it sometimes.

Cheers!

Here you can find a short HiHat demo.

beat 1-4: closed HH played with stick
beat 5-8: 'chick' sound = HH closed with pedal, remains closed for a short time, no stick
beat 9-12: 'footsplash' sound = HH closed with pedal and pedal released immediately, no stick
beat 13 & 14: open HH hit with stick, then closed with pedal

My hihat closing doesn't sound like "chick", it sounds more like "schluck". I think it should be called Hats Pedal Schluck, certainly doesn't sound woman anymore does it?

I've never heard a HH sounding like 'schluck'. Is it a VH-12?
