Default David Gilmour of Pink Floyd sells his guitars.

Anyone want to buy a guitar?

Q:
What attracted you to Stratocasters in the first place?
A:
My boyhood dream was to have a Stratocaster like Hank Marvin in the Shadows had. It was the guitar I always wanted. Lots of other players came along who did nothing but submit to that. Hendrix wasn’t bad on a Strat.
Gotta love that British understatement.

The video is worth a watch, too:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_E6mIYNO3So

Pretty neat to hear the exact sound of Wish You Were Here just fall out of his fingers.

I like how he's not a purist, which is befitting his role in one of the most famous experimental bands in the world. Put holes in his main guitar and modify all sorts of things? Sure, why not. Fender made replicas of his main guitar, and they're so good he can't tell the difference? Well then, sell the original and use one of those.

Nice video clip Reason.

What I've always liked about Gilmour is his unassuming personality that's reflected in his musical style: understated, totally non flamboyant, devoid of pyrotechnics -- a true artist with great sensitivity, and a shit hot technician to boot.

The sad part is they will probably all end up in the hands of rich collectors who will immediately put them behind glass...

That's exactly why it sucks. Nobody who spends hundreds of thousands on the guitar is going to play it. It's an insult to guitars

Dave is one of my all time favs, I still think his solo in Time is one of the best ever.

Synkrotron posted this link in one of my threads:

https://www.christies.com/features/D...on-9637-3.aspx

I was surprised to see that they are only expecting to get around 150 to 200K for the black guitar. I suspect it will end up selling for a lot more than that.

Sad perhaps, but their real value is as a collector's item.

If I had money to burn, that's what I'd do... I'd rather have a guitar hanging on the wall than a painting...

If you want a musical instrument you get something "equivalent" for a lot less money.

It would also be a shame to take one of these guitars out on the road, or to gigs, and seem them deteriorate or get damaged, destroyed, or stolen. "Behind glass", at least they will be preserved.

I remember seeing them at a concert in a small college dining room - back when bands simply toured round the UK's Universities!

I think that guitar is just too iconic to be sold at auction. If it were up to me, Fender would buy it and put it behind glass in their headquarters or put it in the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame. Either way, Fender should take possession of it.

The irony is that uou'd be lucky to get £200 for 'the black one', if it hadn't been Gilmour's.

Guitars aren't special, players are. Gilmour realises these are just things, and he can do a lot of good for people who need help by selling them.

You're right. Sad.

But he’ll probably be keeping 20 guitars ( Dave said ), not bad.

Fender should buy it and put it in their demo room and let everybody play it anytime they want. They could also let you rent it to take the gigs with a big deposit and a chaperone

The auction is ten days after my birthday. Anyone want to put a bid on The Black Strat for me? I promise I'll play it and not put it behind glass. Can't promise I'll sound anything like Dave Gilmour though!!

what's so sad about that?

probably millions of mass-produced actual Fender Strats out there, I'm pretty sure one can find one even with some of them "behind glass". I've got 6 of 'em. They aren't
exactly rare...........

Besides the guitars, does anybody know anything about his setup? Pedals and amps and such? I have always liked his sound.

Univibe is a big part of his sound. Sknote have just released a plugin version that sounds very promising from the demos: https://www.sknoteaudio.com/wp/index...lation-effect/

They already have. Time for new guitars to gift some more.

They're just things, and the money he makes will hopefully make a bigger difference to some people's lives than any sentimentality about a plank of wood with some metal and wires.

Best Tele I ever played belongs to DG and I doubt very much that it will make it into this sale. One of the first version of the Tele Deluxe. Regular tele setup but with white body binding. 3 colour sunburst & rosewood board. Just simply a wonderful tele.

Those guitars are for fans and collecters, not for guitarists.
A good guitar that suits me is a good guitar, a good guitar that don't suits me is a bad guitar.
David made the songs, not his guitars.
Did I say I'm not a Pink Floyd fan?

A particularly good number is the "comfortably numb" item performed back in
2006 in the Gdansk shipyard before an enthralled audience of 50,000 who, up until then, had been starved of live western rock music.

So enjoyable.

I well remember the time when a 69 Strat was thought of as a piece of crap. So now it's the cat's meow because Gilmour played it?

If it is true that a 69 Strat was crap, this makes David Gilmour an even better guitarist than I thought.

Anyway, one man's crap is another man's strad.

didn't say that I thought it was crap, to me they're all the same ... I own an original 59, but the best built one I've ever owned is my 81 MIJ made when Fender had em all made there.

@Judders: Around the time that the whole "pre-CBS" thing was at its height.
I remember people insisting my old 1968 Tele wasnt up to much - until they played it. Wish I had never had to sell it.

Cheers Ivan.

It's always the purists, isn't it?

I've always preferred Tele's to Strats myself.

So enjoyable.
That threw me for a loop. I was wondering why Nick Mason wasn't on drums. Then I realized it was Dave Gilmour's solo project. The thing that threw me was seeing Rick Wright on the Hammond and assuming it was Floyd.
