Was that his first solo one, made in his shed with Willie Wilson & Ricky Wills?
The point of the sale is to separate rich as*wipes from their surplus of cash and use the cash for good in the world. I applaud him and others like Clapton who realize that guitars are just things, and in this case, they are things that can be used to provide help to the less fortunate.
BTW, FWIW, many of those guitars are used up, and would likely need all kinds of special work to be truly playable. Why let them sit and gather dust? A couple of Clapton's went for over $800,000 each a couple of years ago. I think Hard Rock bought blackie.
As for Gilmour, I think he is one of the most under-appreciated guitar players ever. His tone is impeccable and playing authentically emotional. For me at least, it's not how many notes you can play and how fast (shred away if you like), it's WHAT notes you play and HOW you play them. In addition to comfortably numb (one of the most iconic solos ever) I always thought his solos on "On the turning away" were also over the top beautiful.
heh-- wow money is certainly not an issue for some..
yet some may forget, all were students, and remain students of a much, much greater song!
dare challenge apolo to either a lyre,or cithara riff throwdown !
all instruments become a work of art in the players hands or minds..some just get the glory it all deserves, some not.
so long any blood money goes to suitable, worthy causes, all ends well, before it's actually ended.
how much dust can 1 gather?
maybe dave realized 1 cannot 'go' with any physical object,so decided to part with the material side of creation..
=let others have a 'go' > before they also 'go'.
Choice Floyd footage here (I had not seen that before).
What faces have both Gilmour and Waters...such a powerful look when he stares down the lens several times.
Filmed not long after Roger Barrett was left out of the loop.
I was surprised to see that they are only expecting to get around 150 to 200K for the black guitar. I suspect it will end up selling for a lot more than that.
+1. Time, definitely the best guitar solo of all... well... Time. There's not a single note in that solo that doesn't have a reason to be there. Comfortably Numb #2.
