Any interest?
I started fiddling with creating my own icon set. Here is a quick example. Before I go and do the whole thing, is there any interest? If so, I won't take my time as much.
Also, let me know if the colors seem dark. On one of my monitors they seems nice and bright and the other one makes them seem sort of dark and dull.

This is a great start !!! I like em a lot... I will comment on 3 things though...
1 - The letters are a bit big for the size of the buttons... (M,S an R) The fx button is awesome!
2 - The "M" is not centered on the mute button...
3 - I don't like the record button... would prefer a red dot (or a square) but no letters on it.
I can't wait to see the complete set!!!

Looking very good. I can't honestly say that I will use it though unless it is considerably better than the current theme I am using (distinct), those buttons look much better individually that the distinct ones though, so if you can make the whole of it look that good it might be one of the best themes for Reaper so far.
Consider for usability sake to distinguish different types of buttons in some way. There are basically two different types of buttons in reaper:
1. Toggle buttons (buttons that when pressed changes state)
2. Popup buttons (buttons that when pressed pops up a window)
Apart from these there are the transport buttons wich in some ways resemble toogle buttons. Not to talk about the toolbar buttons (new, save, back etc.)
Knowing what will happen when you press a button (if it will popup a window or toogle its state), is essential for the usability and look of any user interface.

After some more goofing around this is where I got to today.
I appreciate the feed back. You think the letters are too big? I sort of like em big. Man, getting gradients to look right is a PITA. And never fear on the mute... I'll get to it. The M is a bit too far left, I know. Any brilliant ideas on the phase button? I was trying to think of things that would represent this well. 0 and 180 was all I could come up with. I thought about + and -, but thought that might get confusing. Maybe "0" and "rev"? I also thought about a sine wave and then flipping it, but I figured it would look too similar either way and I really dug the look of the envelope button as-is.

For the phase button, look at the distinct theme. Something like this would be nice...
As far as the size of the letters, it's your choice... I still think they would look better slightly smaller... but it's your theme and it's no big deal!!!
Some more feedback :
- I really like the toolbar buttons... probably the best ones so far.
- There is really something I don't like with the record (arm) button (other than the fact that it's off centered when enabled)

out of all the "colourfull" icon sets I like these the best..
consider working on the faders, imo they can make the biggest improvement to the look and feel of reaper

As for faders, what do folks prefer? I have been screwing with the idea of photo realistic faders. Thoughts?
Does anyone know the rules on the faders? the icons are all 16x16... but I am not sure as to what Reaper can handle for the faders.
Also, does anyone know of a utility that will do batch conversions from PNG to ICO files? Doing this one at a time sucks.

I just LOVE these, EXCELLENT work! Can't wait to try them myself .
I think the faders are not limited in size, like the icons are. I personally like photo realistic type faders.

Use the existing faders as a template, it's standard BMP format with megenta acting transparent (though of course you can blend the edges into the track colour to "fake" anti-aliasing)

you know what, I've been away for a couple versions and the new one seems to have mis-aligned the faders, and the ones on the master track for pan and speed are off even more....
not a HUGE deal, just it used to not be like that, so if you make faders, it'd be best to note this and either compensate for the lack of alignment or make the faders somewhat "vague" so it doesn't look so off, or hope they fix it in future versions.

I guess 23x14 (or 14x23 depending) is the magic number. Too bad as photo realism is very hard in those dimensions. However, I can't get the transparancy to work at all... I put magenta (color FF00FF) in all the spaces I want transparency and no dice. I left the transparent parts empty and no dice. Hrm.

It's maybe a small thing, but I've been getting a real kick out of trying the different schemes and buttons that people have come up with. I've even cherry-picked a bit by picking my favourite buttons from different offerings and combining with a different colourtheme.
So, yes, I'd love to see what you come up with. I only have 6 favourite schemess right now... there's room for one more I think
(and greetings to another ntrack/audiominds forum user)

Here's today's update:
note I standardized the look. Also, the lettering is smaller on some buttons as someone requested and after looking at it myself I preferred in the end. Sorry on the R on the rec arm... I like the R.
If anyone has ideas on the fader transparency/magenty deal, let me know as it is irritating the crap out of me.
Here is a link to download what I have so far if folks want to start playing with these. Check back for updates.

Nice!
Looking good Bubba!
Try saving your bit map at 256 colours (24 bit won't go transparent).Make sure that pixel (0,0) in the top left most part of the picture has the colour you want to be transparent. Just open up a default fader with the magenta ring around it in Paint and paste your new one on top.

Hi Bubba,

Thanks a ton. They make the GUI a lot easier on my tired old eyeballs.

Yup. No point in reinventing the wheel on some things. Spend 2 hours making a floppy icon... or use open source as a base and get it over with. And some of the default icons I was perfectly okay with (like the crossfade lock). I still want to tackle a few I can't stand. The Rec In deal is pretty miserable to look at.

Do know that the way you are currently distributing the icons is a violation of the license.
You have to add a notice in the package, which icons are under the CC Attribution/Share Alike license, and state who the authors are ("Tango project" with a link should be sufficient)
Actually you're not allowed to rip the icons from the distribution package or rename the files either - as far as i understand.
I am sure that if you specify which icons are from the tango project, attach the license, things are ok.
I hope that you will update your archive, and understand the importance of following the licensing rules.
Nice theme btw.

*sigh*
To keep the world happy I added a readme.
I am not a lawyer and I am not doing this to make a buck. Just trying to make the thing look better. If the authors of Tango have issue with it, have them contact me I'll make it all better.
If any one else cares to know, here is the nickle tour of the license.

Whew! I was worried the MIB were going to come and put me in a bottle and ship me back to my home planet for using these icons!
After seeing this (and a couple glasses of wine) I will sleep MUCH better tonight!
