Default One Last Tweaked

I posted this song a while back but I've since tweaked it a bit (ok, a lot) but I've got two files here. Both 24-bit. One is mastered in HOFA and the other was done in Reaper using Ozone's assistant. I'd appreciate it, if you have the time, to give both a listen and tell me which you think sounds better. I'll reveal which is which at a later date.

And thank you! I really appreciate your time!

One Last 01

One Last 02

EDIT: DOH! Forgot ONE friggin' thing... they should now be volume matched!

I like 02. To my ear, it sounded a little fuller and brighter than 01. Great job either way.

Is that you singing??

Thanks, toleolu. Yes, that is me singing, playing rhythm guitar, piano and synths. My friend Rod Ferguson played the solo's and Phil Smith played drums.

Great song!!
There's too much difference in the volume/loudness to have a fair compare.
The 2nd sound better, but the vocal is kinda dull sounding. I want more high frequencies so it get through better.

Yes. Too much overall volume difference to precisely compare.
First seems muddy to my ears.
Second is brighter (may be a bit to much?), and better to me.

Sorry, but I hate the synth line that shines up between the melody snippets all the times. To me it seems totally displaced in that music both due to it's "artificial" sound, as due to the kind of melodic feeling it introduces.

#02 is definitely 'brighter', a bit clearer to my ears (as echoed by others), so naturally gravitating in that direction. Also, as others have said, the mastering highs are bringing up areas that "need" the highs, and unfortunately boosting others that don't. The balance game.

I'm also detecting something in the chain that seems to be limiting your stereo field? It sounds like a lot of the instruments/vox are stacking upon one another in the middle, and if they separated out a little more across the field, the song would open up.

Great song! Chorus is stellar!

DOH!!!! The one thing I forgot to do was volume match! I fixed that in the original post. They are now volume matched.

So sorry to waste your time!!!!

Thank you for taking the time to listen! I don't really understand the stereo field limiting comment, though. I have the main rhythm instruments at 75% left & right and the piano is more up the middle. Lead guitar is panned wide with dry on one side and wet on the other and I like it. Am I missing something?

When you say main rhythm instruments, does that include drums? Are your OHs 75/75? That may be it. I had another listen, and it sounds like that might be what I was picking up. Totally up to you - but if they are 75/75 - try them at 100/100 and see if it opens up the sound a little.

Forgot about the OH's. Yes they are at 100% and I even added a widener to take them out to about 110. I'll listen a little closer tomorrow and see if I can hear anything that sounds off.

Thanks for pointing that out!!!!! Much appreciated.

Ah, ok... I think I'm hearing what you are hearing. During the verses there is very little going on other than vocals, drums, bass and piano and it kind of narrows the stereo field since the bass and vocals are centered. The piano is stereo and has a bit of spread to it. Then during the pre-chorus the distorted guitars come in heavier and widens the stereo field. There are chugga-chugga guitars during the verses but they are very quiet. I'll work on that some more.

Thanks for pointing that out!

Almost sounds like an anthem. Yet another #2 vote for the same reasons. I think there could be a touch more bass in either--both bass guitar and bass in general.

Thanks, sammydix! I'm going to let it rest for a week or so and then go back and make some changes.

I really appreciate the decency of a response, Jeff. Makes me feel like an actual human with feelings.

I like this song Jeff, it sounds pretty good.

However, to me the vocals are way back there like there's too much reverb. I think the vocals are great and need more presence.

Also the drums are pretty buried.

I don't know, maybe things are just too busy?

I really like the song.

Thanks, Tod! All will be taken into consideration when I revisit in a week or so. Much appreciated!

I like number 2 - maybe with the snare cutting through a bit more.

Nice track
