Default Portable install doesn't show peaks above certain zoom level

Not sure if this is a bug and if so, whether it's known I did a search but the terms yield a wide range of results so I thought I'd post it here first and see if anyone has heard of this before.

Running Reaper off a portable install (USB flash stick), I don't see peaks for media items unless I zoom in really close, then they appear.

This happens in both the media explorer and the main timeline view.

I have the following preference settings:
Generate peak caches: Yes
On project load: Yes
Desired cache resolution: 300
Put new peak files in peaks/subfolder: No
Store peak caches in alternate path...: No

This is using Reaper 5.1, but it was happening on earlier versions as well.

Thanks,

Paul

Ignore me - this doesn't happen on my personal laptop, but does happen on my work one, so I'm guessing it's a machine issue. Not sure my IT team are gonna take it seriously, but I'll have to see how it goes.

Maybe a write permission issue ? (meaning afaik Reaper needs write permission to write the .reapeaks files to read from them when generating the peaks, usually where the imported audio files live(*), if you haven't set an alternate peak cache path).

Just a half-informed assumption as I didn't have this problem myself so far, but maybe it can give you (or your IT team) a hint.

(*)
edit: only if "Put new peak files in peaks/ subfolder relative to media" is set

edit 2:
There's also an option in Preferences -> Media -> "Store peak caches in alternate path if unable to write to media file directory" which could maybe help in this case.
