Default Self humiliation time again...

After dithering for a couple of years, I re-installed Reaper on my Mavericks based Mac Mini Server.

How do I fins out if I am using the 32bit or 64 bit version of iOS Mavericks and any of the existing plugins on the machine? (Like Logic Pro9 ) According to the D/L page Reaper 6.18 should work in 64bit if that is what I have installed already, but...
Good news is that my Lovely Liquid Mix 32 still works just fine.

Mavericks is 64 bit OS compatible which also will run 32bit drivers as well. You can go up to Mojave and still run 32bit apps and drivers . After Mojave its 64 bit for everything or you are screwed.

Im running a Steinberg MR816X here on 32 bit drivers with High Sierra BTW, Reaper runs fine.
Ill move up to Mojave eventually and stop there. Sad part is I cant even run iMovie nor the current LogicProX here as I need Mojave as a minimum and a $225 video card upgrade to run Metal

If ya still running Logic9

If its all working then.....

Note: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard is the last release that a 32-bit Intel Mac can run, Mac OS X 10.7 Lion and up are, by default, 64-bit

Thanks, Shanabit! I will be doing some exploring now I have a clue as to where to go. FWIW, my RME Babyface (the original) is working just fine with the mac Mini.

Interesting. I did the holding buttons down when booting to get into 64bit from 32 and it worked great. Logic Pro 9 was immediately faster & smoother, so I will now put 64bit reaper on there too. Mind you I will have to go see how to switch to 64bit permanently assuming that I can...
Thanks again for the tips.

Darn! I have spent a day learning about Macs & now have a new hard drive ready to replace the crummy 5400rpm ones Apple supply, plus I have learned how to set up and use Timeline at last!

OK, enough. Looks like I am finally getting to grips with Mac OS X.

Ya doing good there. Me, Im OUT after this MacPro dies. Real tired of the chronic OS upgrades that kill software compatibility .

1. Cant run current Logic. Need video card and Catalina
2. Cant run iMovie.

Im DONE with Apple. Dont get sucked down that road its a money suck with ever changing connectors, OS and CPUs now since ARM is out. That will take 2 years for the dust to settle. I went through the last one from PPC to Intel. Im not doing that again to end up with the same functionality I had before the change.

Intel kept AMD around, only because of fear of being called a monopolist.

Have you seen prices on the M1 Macs?

I hate Apple's software garden probably even more than you do. But audio on Linux is still a major pita. I mean, I upgraded my Ubuntu Studio from 19 to 20 and audio became useless. Again.

If anyone can take on Intel, it's Apple. What it does to free software, we'll see. Can't get much worse than it is now.

May we live in interesting times, as the Chinese say

That could be a mistake. The M1 doesn't seem to need that much ram.

Admittedly, it's based on hearsay. But it isn't going too badly, considering this is a beta, really.

And imagine what these processors will do to an ipad.

I said thats what I need here, there is no mistake to what I priced for ME.

iPads will scream now though. When version 2 of this shows up I can't imagine what it will do.

I just sorta went through a sea change. I was told my iPad air mk1 was obsoleted & would not update past 12.xx, then I saw all the stuff about the ARM Macs.
My Mac Mini is still on Mavericks & because of the hardware & software that I have which won`t work past Mavericks, it is staying there till it dies or I sell it.

One of the few reasons I still sorta like Microsoft is that regardless of what the hardware manufacturers come out with, it usually works, unless the actual manufacturer has obsoleted it & wont update drivers, etc.
Kinda like Apple routinely seem to be doing. Back in the halcyon days of Woz and Steve and then just steve, I always had a begrudging respect for Apple.

UPDATE: I just got through reformatting one of my 7200rpm disks and cloning the system disk on my Mini!! Took a few goes to get my head around it, but I am now seriously thinking about sticking a SSD in there too. Maybe there IS a future for me & my Mac.

UPDATE

Bugger. All was going so well until I managed to break off one of the connector pins o the IR board whilst putting it all back together.
Found someone selling one - for 86 UK pounds. Ouch
Edit: But I am now about to hpone a local NON Apple affiliated Mac repairer company & see what they can do for me. fingers crossed.

They didnt have any spare used IR boards, but I have now registered with their supplier & a couple of others, plus have every 2010 - 2011 Mac Mini on ebay at a low starting price on my watch list.... Apparently all I am going to lose if I just dont connect the broken card up is the on/off led on the front of the case, so no big deal.

Dink with OSX if you will.

Me, I have had a G4, G5, MacPro and Im done. I cant wait to build a PC here.

Everything I run does better on PC and I dont have to deal with OS upgrades that kill my stuff. Apple can shove it

The main attraction for me with the Mac is that it is tiny and I already have everything needed to run a 30" 2560x1600 cinema display instead of my 2 23" IPS 1920x1080s that I have on PC.

Maybe you`re right.

Maybe time to grab a nice video card for your PC?

I would do that and continue to mess around with the Mac Mini
