Default "Color My World" - TRACKS..

since i found "Tint media item backgrounds to custom colors" (Pref/Media), i'm in love with it..

..but the visibility of the _selected items_ is color-dependent, and this makes the whole thing unusable as is - for me.

the Time Selection makes things worse/better.. depending on the selected (or random) colors (and our taste..):

and here is my all-time favorite color-scheme: (not Reaper)

(check the fade/crossfade 'tint' and the fade curve colors here too)

* i'd love to see these colors (peak or background tint)
* i'd love to select the colors from a user def palette (8-10 choices)
* more 'user-friendly' Random colors
* inverting colors (peak/background tint) when an item is Selected (NOT under Time Selection)
* no all-time overlay / veiled Time Selection, but a vanishing one when clicked + L-R 'borders' - as you can see in my last screen capture.

and there is more, but now..

you turn.

what you think about these?

I think that there is room for improvement here.
++1 for some love.

I'd personally like to see the intime selection have 3 control settings: in-time selected items colour; in-time unselected items colour; and the in-time empty track colour.

absolutely, I'm actually using single colour waveforms for all my tracks now for this very reason, otherwise it's sometimes very hard to see at a glance which tracks are selected.I'm using stum201 theme with a slight alteration which makes my selected tracks v easy to see as they're orange!!

+ 1

And here's another visual comparison on how it is, and what this FR could make it look like.

Reapers default theme makes tracks appear in two different colour shemes. They are referred to as odd tracks and even tracks in the colour theme preferences.

We'd like more than two. A user settable number in fact. It's up to the colour theme authors to set them up and up to the user how many of them he/she wants to use.

Reaper so far, default theme:

Reaper so far, my personal theme:

---------------------------------------------------------------

A six colour example of what this FR is about

And an example colour sheme for time selection and a selected item, which is the red one in this case

---------------------------------------------------------------

Beatbybit's example is an eight-colour sheme. That would constitute a good upper limit of these cyclic colour shemes for items.

My personal choice would be for four colour shemes.

And let's not forget, should custom colouring of items ever enter Reaper, these shemes would be an obvious choice.

Definitely needs some attention, but the colors need to contrast well.

what i hate the most is, what reaper does with itemcolors in the time selected area. contrast is allways lower then in the surrounding (normal) areas.

i would like to see coloreschemes with additional alphachannel. so you could see overlapping items and lets say you have a grey item with 50% alpha and the peaks are black with 0% alpha, and you have white set for the timeselection area, the item would be light gray in that part and the peaks would stay black.

now with these alphasettiong even colored items would behave the same like normal (uncolored) items.

Absolutely Aldi, that's where thing's go pear shaped, the coloured track waveforms, backgrounds or both are fine it's the highlighting and loop selection where it goes tits up,look at cubendo's waveforms, they are just right in the way the colours work, and importantly as well the way they zoom smoothly

Default brightness and contrast

Slightly off topic. A request I made a while ago was overall contrast and brightness settings for the GUI. This way you could adjust your favourite theme for Hig contrast on stage and then lighten cool dark themes, whatever your preference. I would think this would be easy.

While this is clearly groovy, a few thoughts I have:
  • my straw polling while doing the def gave indication that the users don't even like the colours to change in the odd/even style we can do at the moment.
  • I'm very eager for individual colouring on a per-item basis; its my workflow style and that might become a confusing (and therefore less likely!) development if we had this. Maybe. So a selfish 'boo' there
  • could you not set this up in you default song to do it anyway?
  • is doing it by hand each time you create a track a real chore then? I suppose this entirely depends on how many tracks you use.
Anyhoo... +1 for a bit of attention on this area. There's some colour change / tinting going on (that can't be defined at the moment) which really limits what colour choices you can make for a theme, for example.

My favorite is still cubendo's ,you can have either coloured waveforms or plain black waveforms with coloured backgrounds or my old favorite plain white waveforms with coloured backgrounds and to be able to colour parts independently.

How about starting off with more than "odd" and "even" track colour shemes(or sets).

A maximum of eight is proposed. That is a healthy maximum, though I could think of sixteen too, though not in a cyclic item colouring arrangment view.

So far the colouring has been cyclic. Odd, even, odd, even and so on. Now it's colour 1,2,3,4,1,2,3,4,... for a four colour-set choice.

A slider in the colour theme window to limit the number of colours Reaper actualy uses, or a row of checkboxes to pick which colour sets you wish to use.

All the colour shemes would come in to play for colouring the actual parts with something in the right-click menu of selected items. A simple submenu 'Colour items...' and a dropdown with the swatches of colour.

That would be a good first step. More colours and the individual item colouring as a second step.

Would you be happy with that ?

I'll have to ++1 for enhancements in this area. It would also be nice to be able to use user imported textures.

Another thing I would dearly love would be to hotswitch from horizontal to vertical coloring. That way I could color verses different from the middle-8 or the chorus.

this is what I'd like to see:

*note I have my prefs set such that seleted items get the blue peaks regardless of item colour / time selection. My in-time selction for selected items is the bright blue colour.

They can be re-defined if you do not like it, or you can download a new theme. The new Paula theme is pretty nice and also the orange logic is all the way very nice.

I'm still hoping to see a completely new color palette in Reaper as you can see in Logic. I have already posted this one but I wanna bump it...+1000 for this. Please!!! Lots of beautiful color presets... I love them in Logic.

I could certainly find the right colors for my (Reaper)life, between Vegas and logic + Tallis and Aldis suggestions.

""They can be re-defined if you do not like it, or you can download a new theme.""

nah, they can't, if your items are set to custom colors, you simply can't define the selected item color, and that sucks. Please, it has nothing to do with theme switching, I think I know how to switch theme or how to edit the default colors.
the problem is elsewhere, selected items colors should stay default selected items colors, even if you set your items to custom colors.

But if custom colors are set, the selected colors for them cannot be set, that's right! Hmm.. i guess i misunderstood you. Did I ? I'm sorry then.

I like the way Vegas does it as well, automatically and randomly assigning you a track color as you insert a new track. If you dont like it, you can change it. I also like how the colors it uses are not too saturated, so they are never screaming at you.
My point- I don't even want to think about track colors, as long as each track is distinguished.
