Default Smooth 6 - 1080P/HiDPI/Retina Theme [V2.1]

Smooth is released for free. If you use this theme and would like to say thanks/donate, I've just released my first EP (which was delayed about 6 weeks due to creating smooth, hah!), any support would be much appreciated!

There's no minimum, you can choose whatever amount you feel is right. If you enjoy atmospheric/dark/uplifting electronic (and sci-fi - read the story!), you may even enjoy it :¬)

Donate: Rozko - Iridescent on BandCamp

13/02/2020: Smooth V2.1 with standard/1080p support is released!

Please follow the 3 step installation guide (fonts, theme adjusters and theme files).

- 1080p support
- Windows versions (new/fixed fonts)
- Dark variation
- New MIDI Keyboard

Installing/Using Smooth 6

Download: Smooth 6 V2.1.zip (Fonts, Theme Adjuster and Theme files).

(Click the Open button top right, then select Download.)

**** MANDATORY ****

For the theme to work properly, you MUST follow these steps properly.

First, extract Smooth 6 V2.1.zip. It contains three numbered folders, which correspond to the below steps:

Step 1: Install Fonts

1) Install the two fonts (four files, Regular and Bold for each) on your system. Choose the Mac or Windows folder depending on your Operating System.

Step 2: Install Theme Adjusters

1) Open Reaper, select Options > "Show REAPER resource path in explorer/finder..."

2) Navigate to Scripts folder, then the Cockos folder which is contained within it.

3) Move/copy "Smooth_6_theme_adjuster.lua" and the other three files into the Cockos folder.

Step 3: Install Themes

1) In the main Reaper resources folder, navigate into the ColorThemes folder.

2) Copy the four Smooth theme files into the ColorThemes folder.

Step 4: Set Default TCP Height

The theme was designed for a specific track (TCP) height.

1) Go to Preferences > Project > Track/Send Defaults and set Default Track Height to SMALL:

Done. Go to Options > Themes and then choose Smooth (for Mac) or Smooth_Windows (for Windows). They are both light themes, and have _Dark variations.

Note: I don't like the phase button to be visible on the TCP. If you need to reveal it, just increase the track height, e.g.

Highly Recommended: Theme Adjuster Settings

If you love the look of the screenshots, copy these settings:

Note: If you use TCP meters (Layout B) make sure you use the same settings as shown above.

I've also created a default set of colours for Smooth:

Highlight tracks via MCP or TCP and click the colour on the strip to assign it.

Which translates to:

On that note...

Highly Recommended: Optimised Colours

While you can use any colours you like, the theme was designed with specific values in mind. Use a colour dropper on the SMOOTH colour palette (2 images above) to save them, or use these codes:

Code:
Colour #hex [RGB]
------------------------------
Red	#e4514e [228 81 78]
Orange	#d27831 [210 120 49]
Yellow	#beb24a [190 178 74]
Green	#529646 [82 150 70]
Teal	#45968c [69 150 140]
Blue	#437acb [67 122 203]
Indigo	#7f75e3 [127 117 227]
Violet	#a766c8 [167 102 200]
Highly Recommended: MCP Folder Icons

If you want these nice folder icons/actions:

Just click the 'i' icon on the master track and select Clickable icon for folder tracks to show/hide children.

Big thank you to all the people who helped, especially PhelixK and synkrotron. Also Mordi, otsoa, Odys and lastly White Tie (amazing job coding WALTER, V6 theme structure and the Theme Adjuster).

P.S. If you're a fan of coloured MCP FX/send lists (I'm not, hence they're disabled by default) I've hidden an easter egg:

To enable it, you need to unpack the theme (there are guides on this forum), go to the 200 folder and remove the 'colour' extension from these files...

1) mcp_extmixbg.png.colour
2) mcp_extmixbgsel.png.colour

Remember to back the original files up first :¬)

FAQ

Does it support HiDPI?

Yes, it supports HiDPI and Retina.

Does it support 1080p?

Yes.

I'm a Windows user and the fonts are too big!

Select Smooth_6_Windows (or the Windows_Dark version) from the Options > Theme menu.

Does this theme work with the Theme Adjuster script?

Yes, the theme comes with it's own adjuster scripts that are available in Options > Themes > Theme Adjuster.

I get missing file errors when loading the Theme Adjuster

See "Step 2: Install Theme Adjuster" in the installation guide above. Make sure you place the file in Scripts/Cockos folder.

Can I hide/show TCP elements?

Yes, via the Theme Adjuster.

Does this have MCP separators?

Yes, access them via Options > Layouts > Mixer.

Any plans to replace the toolbar icons?

Maybe.

Will this work on dual screens that are HiDPI and 1080p?

Yes

The transport font is weird!

You must install the custom fonts.

How do I get coloured fader-caps layouts to automatically appear?

Use the SWS Autocolor/Icon/Layout extension; set the same shade of green used in Smooth for your drum tracks, then in the MCP Layout column of that screen, enter: 150%_A green (or whatever layout you want to use). Repeat for each colour/layout. Then under options, make sure "Auto-Track Coloring" and 'Enable Auto Track Layout" are enabled.

Thanks to PhelixK, synkrotron and Odys for the coding help. Also Mordi, glymur, otsoa and FunkyBot.

Big thanks to Ideosound for help with the 1080p conversion.

Certainly the simpler stuff... I had to give up trying to follow WT's complex code in the R5 and R6 themes. And my graphics ain't a patch on yours. But I'm certainly enjoying it

I'm afraid not. It Scales the length but not the width; this is just one of the things that hasn't been got to yet.

There are very sensible practical arguments for using the code pointers in the default theme, but I would suggest there are very few arguments for anyone else using them. Use a bitmap stack and never look back

I still need to wrap my head around it, as it stands I'm replacing graphics 1:1 and not touching rtconfig.

Ah OK, I'll put a feature request in as it's such a handy feature. I'll make do with a 1px line for now :¬)

Apologies for asking such a question, but I can't for the life of me find where/how to use an overlay image on the MCP background (top colour section). Am I missing something obvious? Been stumped for about 30 minutes!

Ah, I see. Well, it is great what you can do with just altering the graphics

What graphics software(s) do you use?

Working within boundaries can go either way. Thankfully V6 (like the versions before, I'm sure) is designed in such a way you can jump straight in.

You will have to enlarge the png provided, and depending on what you want to do with it add pink lines or not. Mine just adds a bit of shade for the controls to be easily visible even in lighter colors, and also stretches the upper section for the FX to blend in.

Notice the first transparent square from the top down, thats where the upper colored section is.

CLEAN!

I love this look so far. I planned on doing my own theme eventually, maybe over Christmas. But I might not bother, if this can be run on 1080p screens. Can it? That's all I have, unfortunately.

mcp_bg.png
and mcp_bgsel.png

Theme is looking good Bose. I'm nearly done modding 6.0 for my needs now - the last hurdle was getting the track names above the mixer and still sticking while resizing, but I just about figured it out last night.

White Tie - I was checking out your walter guide to figure out the above, and the hitchhikers reference made me smile immediately. I had the one all in one version of that 'trilogy of five' growing up, and I think it's still my favourite book to this day.

Depending on what you want to achieve, there are a few more images to tweak than those mentioned here.

For instance;

mcp_vol_label.png
meter_bg_mcp.png

Anyone with the same problem can use this one i made for my v6 mod, if its still 22px in size. Or use KnobMan to make your own stack then rename it to section_function_knob_stack.png

You can find more about what images reaper is using here: https://www.reaper.fm/sdk/walter/images.php

Hey man. Encountered a bug - any font changes I make via the theme tweaker are instantly overridden. Changing the timeline font for example, I see it change for a split second when I press OK to close font window, but it reverts straight back.

Not sure if it's related, but there is also no font listed when I double click to open/change:

I notice in rtconfig it says the WALTER fonts are Calibri. I don't have that installed as I'm on OSX, that's a Windows creation if I recall correctly.

Edit: some fonts work (very few), and if they do, I still can't change the size or weight. Always big, always bold.

Any ideas?

Back to the theme - fixed a bug and tweaked the FX/sends slightly:

I'll make some MIDI changes while waiting to see what the problem is with the fonts.

Changes will be lost on the next refresh unless they're saved.
If you cannot get the fonts to change at all, there maybe something (script?) overriding your changes
Hopefully White Tie or someone can provide a clue as to what the cause may be. changing.

Thanks Lucas. It's most certainly a bug. Happening with the default V6 theme also.

(I mean, yes or no as to whether it will require a lot of code changing, in your opinion).

Also, this thing is looking better and better. I love your art style. Very simple looking, in a way, but also quite sharp and pro. Exactly what I'd like to see.
Cheers Nait :¬)

1080p (Scale 1x) version - no code changes necessary! It's just a matter of resizing the images by 50%. The only 'tricky' bit is making sure the stretch markers (yellow and fuscia pink 1px lines) are correct, they won't downscale properly.

You may need to adjust layer styles to accommodate, i.e. shadow depth, stroke width etc as they're set for 2x scale. Still, it would be much faster than designing a theme from scratch!

More FX list tweaks. Looking sweet now!

Kinda like V6's default font colour for bypassed plugins - getting used to it. Might make it grey for the official release though so people can colour it how they want.

@b0se, what font/label area are you trying to change?

In concern of font usage/drawing, the whole scenario is somewhat a mystery to me as well. Some fonts display as expected, other seem impossible to control.

and yes,
– in the case of v6 default, obviously it is designed to be used with the Calibri font, as defined within rtconfig.
– additionally some font styling and colors can be user-defined with theme tweaker, but not all apparently.
– furthermore certain rules for coloring and transparency are defined inside rt, eg. Pan labels.

For your information I have Calibri installed here on mac, but still I’m unable to change certain styles and definitions, so having the correct font isn’t necessary a solution.

Users that do not have the actual font installed on their system, will have a fall-back font displayed. In case of def.6, the fall-back is typically Helvetica or Arial, depending on platform and nearest family available.

Here’s an example of three different typefaces present in Def.6 and Helvetica that many users see as fall-back substitution:

On another note,
I have tried really hard to find out how to change the font used in the MCP VU meter peak readout, but still no luck. I believe there’s a problem since the peak readout is cropped in def.6 (def.5 doesn’t have it), and I notice this cropping is also present in your mock-up here:

The cropping can be avoided by changing label width and margins in, but unfortunately when I tried this myself, it pushes the narrow and extended view in mcp.

So,
If you, or someone have a solution how to redefine the vu meter font, or perhaps a better way of resizing the peak readout area, I would be very grateful since I’m a total theme-rookie myself. I’m not trying to pick on your fine work b0se, and sorry if this is too much OT and not in your concern ツ

Got all the fonts changed and aligned, looking much nicer.

Except the damn transport font. It works for the label, but on the actual time/bars...

None of the WALTER fonts in the theme tweaker change it.

@White Tie - any ideas?

Default Does it have Separators?

Great looking theme...I am not sure if anyone has asked this question.
And I havent looked fully at the all the images and details yet...
But does it have separators???
One of the main reasons I feel separators are so important is because you can lay out both the Mixer and Track Panel clearly in groups, especially if you are using a fair amount of VST, even coloring the mixer does not work as well IMHO.
The reason I have stuck with Commala 5 is because of this facility, plus different sized and styling of the mixer panel...which is extremely useful to define sub masters, and child tracks etc...makes life a lot easier when the mix gets more populated.
It does look nice tho...I really hope it has some of these features.
Cheers

Can increasing the width of the narrow MCP layout help? Or does the whole thing need tweaking?

Any ideas?
This is a HiDPI/Retina only theme atm, it won't work on standard res. If you are HiDPI, check out Odys' inception post below yours :¬)

Cheers
Go back one page to see separators. Thanks!

There is a bit of a pattern here... This topic is now so large that not only is it difficult for new people to this find information that they are looking for, it must sometimes be difficult for you to remember where stuff was mentioned.

Might be worth adding a FAQ section in the original post based on all the most common questions asked here and then when someone new pops in asking something that has been asked before many times, all you have to do is refer them to that FAQ section in the original post.

Yeah... I know... You're busy enough as it is!

That's a good idea. I'd rather start on the 1080p version first though.

On that note: anyone waiting for 1080p version willing to help out with a FAQ?

Oooh no. No no no. Very murky waters ahead, I urge you to please reconsider your position, lets not let this turn into something boring. Oh, and the Default V6 theme isn't mine, its the property of Cockos Inc.

I understand entirely why you would want control over your creative output. You don't want money, you just don't want to see it get messed up. I totally get that. I have had mods of Imperial done that near make my eyes bleed and soul weep. But here's the thing: if someone likes the horrible thing they did, and they share it, and someone else likes it, that's two people getting more value out of you work than they did the way you left it. Yes, they are wrong, you're probably right, but to those two people your work has gained value.

I urge you, please, to change course. Do your work, put it out, then let what happens happen. Let your bits appear in all manner of themes, and take on a life of their own in Reaper themes; beyond what you imagine, I guarantee at least something will bring you delight.

I often ask people not to mod my themes until they are finished, that's what I did with my WIP Imperial v5 and my request has been respected completely. Nice people, round here.

As ever, if anyone were to start charging for your work, just say the word and I'll bring all of my (FWIW) admin powers on your behalf, and I'd also pee in their coffee.

If you want to manually configure them for each track, just select the Mixer Layout for the fader cap color you want. If you want the colors of the caps to automatically match the color of your channels via a more automatic approach...

How do I get colored fader-caps layouts to automatically appear?
If you want to use the colored fader caps, a best practice approach is to use the SWS Autocolor/Icon/Layout extension. For instance, set the same shade of green used in Smooth for your drum tracks, then in the MCP Layout column of that screen, enter: 150%_A green (or whatever layout you want to use). Repeat for each color/layout. Then under options, make sure "Auto-Track Coloring" and 'Enable Auto Track Layout" are enabled. Now your tracks and mixer fader caps will automatically be colored accordingly.

Huh, interesting! OK, thank you.

As I mentioned in the above post, the Theme Adjuster in Reaper is, well, not what I would call simple to decipher. :-) Where would I adjust the color/brightness of the volume and pan value readouts in the TCP?

That's a great tip, need to add that to the FAQ still, thanks.

The Theme Adjuster is very simple compared to the alternative, WT did a great job on it! It's not an all encompassing editor for Reaper, it offers specific options for the user to change.

Changing something such as pan/volume colour is 'minutiae' and is done manually. You need to unpack the theme and edit rtconfig.txt. The lines you need to change are:

set tcp.pan.label.color [180 180 180]

That's RBG. Make it brighter with [200 200 200] or similar. Same for:

set tcp.volume.label.color [180 180 180]

This kind of thing has been covered in the forum many times, just search for more explicit instructions.

Thank you.

I was confusing the simple Theme Adjustor with the very deep/complcateded line-by-line Reaper one.

Truly stunning. I don't think I'd ever consider using another theme. Really looking forward to test driving the 1080p version. Thanks for your hard work.

I really like what you've done with this theme. Would anyone be kind enough to tell me how I could go about accomplishing something like the attached where the Mixer track backgrounds use the track color with a specified opacity?

Default THE BEST THEME IF ONLY...

First time in years I'm tempted to switch theme from my usual theme!!

Only thing that I would really love is to keep aligned the controls in track view even when tracks are indented (track view). Now if I have many folders all controls are waiving.

Best would be to have a layout with fill controls alignemt + different controls priority (e.g. first TRIM, then PAN, then RCV/SND that are usually operated from Mixer View)

As an example I post here an image of Albert theme I tweaked that way to keep controls in the same position as much as possible. You can not Solo and Mute are always there, such as trim, phase and pan. Some control move only when the track is too narrow horizontally
