Default Setting up a server online

I am very new here. I am looking for information on how to set up a server online. I have my own service provider, running a Linux system. I have very extensive bandwidth available from my provider. Has anyone set up a server on their own ISP setup before, and if so, what all is needed to be done?

Thank you;

You need shell prompt access and the ability to open ports other than port 80, as a minimum.
