Default The Useful Macro Thread

** I added a Default Macro Keymap already set up to try out!**

...and a PDF Help File...just drop it in Program Files/REAPER, and you can access it from the help menu.

MACROS

Here's a few useful macros I've come up with or collected, hopefully you guys can use some of them. I'll put a keymap up for these eventually so users can load it and quickly try them out... I'll bump this thread again when it's up. Enjoy!

(Caveat - Some of these may depend on my preference settings, ie I set the cursor to go to the start of loop selections when changed, in Prefs-Audio-Playback-seek on loop selection change, & only when repeat is enabled)

***EDIT: Selection on Top of items with Left-Click Drag***

My eternal search here has proven fruitful...I had another go at this and lo, it works and it's accurate!

I mapped it to Q, you just press Q once (no holding), then Left-Click and drag on top of items. It obeys snap, so just toggle snap when you need to (I map that to A).

You can also use Q to place the cursor, and just hit escape to kill the loop selection.

*This works a lot easier than the current default, Ctrl Right-Click-Drag...and no need for a script either!

*Make sure the box in Options-Preferences-Editing Behaviour-'Move edit cursor to start of loop selection on loop selection change' is checked.

*Tracks/Folders*

Apply a Muted Overview to a Drum Folder:

This renders a mix of the folder, mutes it, and places it on the Folder track. You can then group the folder and child tracks, minimize the folder, and edit the folder track as you wish, which edits all the tracks. This is very useful for editing drum tracks, slicing up beats, or just hiding the child tracks and still seeing where you are.

Because of the 6 action limit, I had to spread this over 2 macros.

Ctrl-Shift-O

Track: render selected tracks to stem tracks (and mute/bypass originals)
Item: select all items in selected tracks
Item edit: move items down one track
Track: go to next track
Track: toggle fx bypass for selected tracks
Track: mute/unmute selected tracks

Ctrl-Shift-P

Item properties: toggle items mute
Item navigation: select and move to item in previous track
Track: cut selected tracks
Item navigation: select and move to item in next track
Item navigation: select and move to item in previous track

Freeze Selected Tracks

This automatically applies fx to items in a track, and offlines and bypasses the fx.

Ctrl-Alt-A

Item: select all items in selected tracks
Item: apply fx to items
Track: set all fx offline for selected tracks
Track: toggle fx bypass for selected tracks

Unfreeze Selected Tracks

This unfreezes the track.

Ctrl-Alt-U

Item: select all items in selected tracks
Item: delete current take from items
Track: set all fx online for selected tracks
Track: toggle fx bypass for selected tracks

Apply FX Destructively as a New Take

This is to apply new fx to a track and render it, without affecting the present fx. It moves the file to a new track, applies the fx, and places it back on the original track again. You can reverse the process using the Unfreeze Macro.

Alt-F9

Track: insert new track
Item edit: move items down one track
View -> show fx browser window
Now you select the fx, tweak it to taste, and continue…

Alt-F10

Item: apply fx to items
Item edit: move items up one track
Track: cut selected track

Auto-Render of VSTi Multi Folder Outputs

I designed this after recording V-drums into Reaper using DFH EZ Drummer in a folder. After editing the midi, I then wanted to render the audio for the multiple outputs, and bypass the VSTi. This automates the process.

Shift-Alt-R

Track: render selected tracks to stem tracks (and mute/bypass originals)
Item: select all items in selected tracks
Item edit: move items down one track
Track: remove selected tracks
Track: unmute all tracks

Duplicate Item on Tracks

This is for quick repeat pasting of items (if you don’t have the cursor move while pasting by default in preferences… I don’t)

Ctrl-D

Item navigation: move cursor right to edge of item
Edit-> copy items (depending on focus)
Item: paste items (depending on focus)

Duplicate Tracks without Items

Alt-Shift-D

Track: duplicate selected tracks
Item: select all items in selected tracks
Item: remove selected items

Duplicate Tracks - Shift-D (single keystroke)

*Zoom*

Zoom Items

Point the mouse at the items you want to zoom in on, hit Z, and it will enlarge it to fit the screen. The tracks must be least 2 sizes larger than minimum, which is where the Reverse Zoom leaves you, ready to auto-zoom another item.

Z

Item: select item under mouse cursor
Loop selection: set loop selection to selected items
View: zoom loop selection
Loop selection: remove loop selection
View: toggle tracks to maximum height

Reverse Zoom

Shift-Z

View: zoom out project

Zoom Selected Area - Alt-Z

Bump ... still waiting ...

But seriously, this is a great idea and will be much appreciated. I'd like to use it to add a section near the end of the User Guide on Sample Macros (credited of coures to the Macro Maestro)

Yeah sorry Nicholas, I've been rewriting a few with the new actions and trying out different combinations, plus doing some recording.

I'll post it when it's ready in the first post, and give it a bump. Who would know we'd suddenly get all these incredibly useful new actions?

And also, I keep thinking of new ones. But it will happen.

Haha, thanks and don't forget to add your own to this thread. I'm officially out of ideas until Justin codes some new feature in.

I'll just concentrate on getting a default macro keymap finished...do you know you can load a new keymap in 5 seconds? It's a great workflow enhancer.

Default Macro KeyMap Added

I've added a Default Macro KeyMap for anyone game to try it, with instructions for loading and unloading macros, plus the keymapping list. Just drop the keymap in Program Files/REAPER/Keymaps.

Try them out and let me know any broken ones.

Default PDF Help File

Here's a PDF for the Macro Keymap...drop it in Program Files/REAPER, and then you can access it from the Help menu in REAPER.

Default Band CD Macro

OK here's one, it's ridiculously simple, two commands only, but boy do I find it useful.

So you've got a band/solo artist/ whatever to record.

You create a project file for their first song. You use track templates to insert (for example) a vocal track with FX plugins with presets (all set to bypass), guitar tracks with plugins all set to bypass for now, drum tracks, etc according to the makup of the group.

Before recording your first song, you organise anything that needs organising into folders and save.

You arm all tracks for recording and select the appropriate inputs. Save again.

All ready to go!

But before I do, I run my "\" macro. Just two commands:

Track: Select all tracks
Track: Save selected tracks as track template

I'm prompted for a name, I give it the band name, then Save.

So then for every new song to be recorded:

1. Create new empty project.
2. Insert track from template - select band name

Hey presto!

Very, very simple, not nearly as clever as Art's or Bevosss's power macros.

But still pretty darned handy!

That's awesome, I didn't even know that was an action...I've been doing it the long way, shift-select,right click, etc.

Brilliant!

Actually, come to think of it, you can add a third item, to unselect all tracks after saving the track template ....

LOVE your macros...but I found an issue. If you look at the Themes forum, Youn has released a pretty nice theme.....BUT, if I use your macros, and press Z, then the sizing gets messed....and does not set back until Reaper is restarted...any idea what in the Z macro would be overriding the 1.25 or 1.5 sizing froim Youn's config????

No idea...just try the steps one at a time to find the culprit, ie select item under mouse first, then loop selection to item, fit loop to screen, maximize track, etc. I'm sure Justin will fix it once it's isolated, probably something in the UI changes lately.

Does it happen if you roll back to 1.869 or earlier?

Default Tap at Measure Start to Tempo Map Freetime Songs

*Added this from another thread, (a macro I wrote for Bubbagump),seems to work well...you just play the tune and click on the 'one' of every measure, play it through once and you are done...it pays to concentrate so you don't have to stop!

*Make sure you set the cursor at the start and press the macro once, before hitting play.

Default Tip for tempo mapping

I had a bit of practice with the last macro, here's a quick tip if the song doesn't start immediately at 1.0.0:

1. It pays to define the first downbeat of the song, set a normal marker there.

2. Set another marker at the start of the next measure in by ear.

3. Double click between them to create a loop selection, then set your cursor to the right hand marker.

4. Press the Tempo Marker Macro, to create the first measure

5. Press it again for luck (Nothing happens if there is already a tempo marker there, but if I remember correctly I may have had to do this to continue properly...ymmv)

6. Start play from the last marker, and proceed as defined above (click at the one/start of every new measure)

Default Copy and paste an item with empty space included

This macro is for when you want to copy an empty space in front of an item as well as the item, eg if the item starts at bar 3 of a verse, and you want to paste at the start of a verse elsewhere.

This will copy from the start of the loop selection to the end of the item.

Just loop select the area to copy, make sure the cursor is at the start of the loop area, then point the cursor at the item to copy, press the macro, choose the track and position to paste in, press the second macro.

It'll copy the empty area as well as the item.

*Copy selected item renames it empty item xxx, whereas cut selected item keeps the name intact.

Default A True Split Tool...Cursor stays put!

Ok, I've coded a TRUE Split tool in, where the cursor doesn't move. I've added it to the Regions2 ReaperScript, mapped to the keypad slash (/) (NumpadDiv to you scripters). Get it HERE if you need it.

It works by saving and reloading a screenset in the same stroke.

All you need to do is download the .rar, put the Macros DK keymap into REAPER/keymaps, and the ReaperScript RegionsSplitTool into Reaper/Scripts, or wherever you keep them.

This relies on the track cursor being checked in track screensets, which it is by default unless you've changed it last time.

Now, if you've started ReaperScript and picked the Region2 ReaperScript, and loaded the macros DK keymap, then when you press the (/) key on the keypad, it will split where the mouse cursor is...but NOT move the cursor (well actually the cursor moves to and fro very fast, but for all intents and purposes it does not move).

Why? Well a few people had mentioned it, but mostly because it was there.

Try it with Crosshair, it's ultra accurate...

Default Create Region Macro

This macro self creates, real fast for mapping out a song.

Just set the cursor at the start of the first region, then place your mouse at the end of the region, and press the shortcut (I've chosen Alt-/...choose whatever).

A region is created and the cursor is automatically placed there, ready for the next region. Place your cursor at the end of the next region, press it again...rinse and repeat.

*You can set action 2 so it snaps if you prefer, then just disable snapping globally when you need to...which might suit midi types more, locked to the grid etc.

Dude...I had know idea we had this amount of control! This one rocks for me modified slightly. The Pro Toolers will like this one but it works better in Reaper because you just have to hover your mouse over the area that you want to apply the split to:

Shortcut: B

Actions:

Item: select item under mouse cursor
View: move edit cursor to mouse cursor (no snapping)
Item(s): split items at edit or play cursor
Item: Unselect All Items

A few more for the PT guys who need the speed and still wanna feel at home. The advantage of these, is that you just have to hover the mouse over the area you wish to apply the action then hit the shortcut key as apposed to clicking the area, then applyng the shortcut key. Your editing will fly with this method. I'll include both PT and Reaper lingo:

Trim Start to Insertion/Trim items left of cursor

Shortcut: A

Actions:

Item: select item under mouse cursor
View: move edit cursor to mouse cursor (no snapping)
Item: Trim items left of cursor
Item: Unselect All Items

Trim End to Insertion/Trim items right of cursor

Shortcut: S

Actions:

Item: select item under mouse cursor
View: move edit cursor to mouse cursor (no snapping)
Item: Trim items right of cursor
Item: Unselect All Items

Fade to Start (available if no selection)/Fade items into cursor

Shortcut: D

Actions:

Item: select item under mouse cursor
View: move edit cursor to mouse cursor (no snapping)
Item: Fade items into cursor
Item: Unselect All Items

Fade to End (available if no selection)/Fade items out from cursor

Shortcut: G

Actions:

Item: select item under mouse cursor
View: move edit cursor to mouse cursor (no snapping)
Item: Fade items out from cursor
Item: Unselect All Items

Separate/Split item(s) at edit or play cursor

Shortcut: B

Actions:

Item: select item under mouse cursor
View: move edit cursor to mouse cursor (no snapping)
Item: Split item(s) at edit or play cursor
Item: Unselect All Items

Ha, I have those partially but forgot to include them! I was getting pretty tired towards the end of that list... Nice mods, I have U assigned to unselect all items anyway, so I just hit that whenever I need to...I don't mind having an item selected somewhere, gives me a point to navigate from with the selected item navigation actions I assigned to the arrow keys. Others would definitely prefer yours!

Did you see this 'true' split tool here?

Just for when you want the cursor to stay put while you split.

I'll check this one out. Here is another modified one for speed editing. Still working on this one:

Edit Selection(modified)

Shortcut: F1

Actions:

Item: select item under mouse cursor
View: move edit cursor to mouse cursor (no snapping)
Loop Selection: Set start point

Shortcut: F2

Actions:

View: move edit cursor to mouse cursor (no snapping)
Loop Selection: Set end point

Nice impovement! It's great to have some more ideas here, the logic will surely flow...thanks! That one's better for selection on items (I have that on F3/4), my original one is aimed at just straight looping, a little faster for that with snap enabled.

Reading through some of these "mouse cursor" macros I'm rapidly reaching the conclusion that I should add a special section on these speed-editing macros to the User Guide.

This shall be done!

My logic for editing is based off of, "Think the thought, and the action is done." Now I dont think that is gonna happen any time soon with the current evolution of man. But we can aim to get close. Something more like, "the shortest distance(or minimal amount of actions) between the thought , and the final result you're trying to achieve". That's probably a little more workable.

When it comes to editing, I'm not a fan of Tools, Multi-Tools, Tooless or Right click menu etc approaches. They're all still very slow compared to shortcuts. It is very painful to watch someone on my PT rig mousing around with the mouse selecting Tools etc, when the action they were trying to do could have been done 5 minutes ago with a shortcut.

Example 1:

Thought: I need to create a fade. Action: move mouse up to selector tool, click selector tool, move mouse down to region, click before region starts, drag mouse right for desired length, release mouse button, move mouse up to edit menu, click edit menu, drag mouse down to "Fades", move mouse over to submenu, hover mouse over, "create fade", click mouse, a Fades window will open, make about 10 more mouse and click moves for desired fade, click, "ok", your fade is now done. Move to your next edit. This is extreme and every DAW and approach is different but...no thanks.

Example 2:

Thought I need to create a fade. Action: Move mouse to beginning of region(item), move mouse around until the Fade Tool appears, realize you need to zoom in a bit more to get this more accurate, move scroll wheel to zoom in, painfully move the mouse around at the start of the region(item) until the Fade Tool appears, click mouse button, drag mouse to the right for desired length, release mouse button. Done. Move to your next edit. A bit faster but...no thanks, still to slow.

Example 3:

Thought: I need to create a fade. Action: Hover mouse over the area you would like the fade, hit shortcut key. Done. Move to your next edit. I'll take this approach thank you. And if we can make it faster, let me know.

The "R" in "REAPER" stands for "Rapid". Let's make it so. We need more speed editing macros. Bring it on.

Bevosss, have you ever tried AutoHotKey? I've just been exploring it and so far it's a great app. It might come in handy with some of these super macros.

... which, unless I'm mistaken, I put you on to

Did you get my PM about this? It would be good if you could give us some help/input into the AHK section I'm writing for the User Guide. Your understanding and experience in these areas would be most valuable.
