Default Master track vu meter options

When I right click on the master track vu meter the settings dialogue box appears. The manual references them but never explains what they are for. In particular, I am looking for an explanation of the bottom 4 options—window size, display offset, display gain and red threshold. Red threshold I would assume to be the upper volume level, 0 dB would be 0 dBFS? Any clarification would be appreciated.

Those all apply to the RMS meters on the outer part of the master meter.

RMS is an average over time, and window size tells it how long that time is. The default of 300ms is pretty close to the ballistics of analog VU meters, and the same as what’s used for short term LUFS.

Display offset moves the RMS scale relative to the peak scale while display gain offsets the actual levels agains that rms scale. So like if you put both offset and gain at 18db, average levels of -18dbFS will read as 0 but 18db down from the top of the meter - much like you’d see on analog VU.

Red threshold tells it where the meter goes from green to red, which since its RMS is just kind of up to you as a warning that your average levels are getting a bit high or whatever.
