Default Dimaension X - Plagues of Aegyptus

New Dimaension X album finally completed (recorded with 4.78 and then finished the mixing, etc., in Reaper 5.0!)

Plagues of Aegyptus

https://archive.org/details/plagues_of_aegyptus

It's basically an epic ambient tribal drone doom metal musical interpretation of the Ten Plagues of Egypt from the Book of Exodus, complete with narration done with a text-to-speech converter.

And I now have the songs to the album posted on YouTube!

I probably should have used Reaper's video editing, but I already did it in Windows Movie Maker. Next time!

Hi, I'm just listening to 'Frogs' now, and quite enjoying the nice crunch tone on the main riff guitar.

I can't promise I'll get around to listening to the whole album, but it seems like a great job that you've done. I'm wondering what amount your tongue was in your cheek here. Are you a big spinal tap fan?

Hey Hamish!

Yeah, it's sort of tongue in cheek. Not quite Spinal Tap, but I get it. Maybe it's too serious to be taken seriously? Hey, ... it's metal! Big, epic, and what's more epic than biblical themes? Not meant to be a religious statement at all. I just thought the context and content worked well with the creepy narration. Halloween's coming up soon, so I was in the mood to do something dark and scary.

Regarding the guitar tone, most of the guitars are my Schecter Omen 6 going straight into my Yamaha THR-10 and I'm using the "factory setting" Modern patch. It's big, thick, wooly. A bit "saggier" than I usually use. Then I did go back and add some of the more "riffy" parts with my Yahama SSJ-550 thru my POD XTLive (using the JCM800 Marshall with a TubeScreamer) with the guitar tone control turned all the way off to get that Celtic Frost Tom G. Warrior tone.

This stuff is pretty cool.
Although, if I may say so, I think it would benefit from some real vocals. Something minimal maybe, like with Godflesh. Don't get me wrong, I like the idea of the "generated" speech as vocals but to me metal just needs singing.
Unless it's stuff like Sunn O))) that's based on textures rather then riffs, but that's hardly heavy metal anymore if you ask me.

EDIT: I was reading about your gear on your blog and I'd like to ask you: did you mix on those speakers? Because that would make me ashamed of how bad my mixes sound compared to yours, and I do use proper flat monitors.

Thanks for the comments guys. To me, it's the "overall" sound I'm concerned with - does the music convey the atmosphere I'm looking for? I agree that real vocals would be so much better than the text-to-speech stuff (any one else hear Rutger Hauer's narration in Arjen Lucassen's album?), but I kind of like the "inhuman" element to them. I'm trying to figure out how to use them in another context.

And yes, I mix with these crappy cheap Logitech X-140 speakers that I bought for about $30.00 at Target. I figure that most people listen to most of their music through computer speakers or weird headphones nowadays anyway, so if it sounds good coming out of these speakers, then I'm probably on target (no pun intended there!).

I still need some work on my mixing and mastering. Things seem to "compress" and flatten out more than I want. But this style of music tends to be very "muddy" and thick. I'm no Steven Wilson or Andy Sneap, ... what you hear is what you get. Maybe I'm the Ed Wood of production?

Anyways, thanks again, and any criticisms are greatly valued and appreciated.
