When a MIDI file is imported the track names in Reaper are extracted from "Track name" events within the MIDI file.

If there are not present there might be a Program Change (PC) message with a value such as 121-0-26. The last part defines the instrument. Looking at the GM.reabank file (installed with Reaper) "26" is an Electric Guitar (Jazz).

Some MIDI files that I import into Reaper, shows my the track names and some don't.
It all depends on how the composer of the MIDI song configured it.

I use SynthFont to load the MIDI file, and from their I name the tracks.
