media explorer playing slowed with a lot of artifacts

When I play a file through the media explorer, it plays back slowed but with no pitch change which makes it have a bunch of artifacts. the rate on the media explorer and my project are not changed. any clue what is going on? I have tried reinstalling reaper and switching to an old version but it still keeps happening.

You may need to update the audio codec for media player. Have you tried playing the clip in a different player app?

I have played the clip in another player and it worked just fine. How do you update the audio codec?

It may be that you have inadvertently changed the settings in the small window "Equal time: ON .... Equal time: OFF" etc. ???
