Win11: which video decoder?
I came across a video that was not playing in Reaper. I could not understand why, since the same video was playing a few versions ago. Then I discovered that the video decoder priority had changed automatically, favoring WMF as the first choice.
I have the full FFMPEG installed and configured for Reaper, and I have also VLC installed. So, my question is: for Win11, how do the three codecs compare in terms of stability, performance and amount of formats supported? Which should I choose? (Atm, I have set the video decoder priority as: "ffmpeg wmf vlc")

For me, on an old machine, wmf is fantastic and a superior experience to the other options, since it became available. I have a GPU that doesnt support encoding, but does support decoding (I think).
I can still render 4K, its quicker, its more stable, if I cancel the render it doesnt crash Reaper. I still dont get smooth 4k playback in Reaper, but its much easier to deal with WMF for rendering on my machine. Obviously all of this could be just down to my machine and Windows installation, or something I'm missing. EDIT: Sorry, just realised I'm totally off topic, youre specifically talking about playback in Reaper. |

Thanks for sharing your experience! No, you are not at all off topic. I care about both encoding and decoding.
