Default USB to HDMI converter for extra display?

Anyone tried one of these or similar on windows?

https://www.amazon.co.uk/StarTech-co...rs%2C68&sr=1-3

I have two screens running on a GT1030 card. I'd like to add a third.

Current main screen is 49" ultrawide 5120 x 1440 and second is 24" 1920x1200.

New extra screen would be 15" 1920 x 1080

Can't find a graphics card that can cope with 3 monitors and that hig a combined resolution :-) At least not for under £700 :-(

So thinking either a USB to HDMI adapter or a super cheap additional PCI card just to power the extra small screen.

I'm on a ryzen 3950 desktop windows 10.

I have a powered usb hub for my interface, mouse, midi interface running to my windows 10 notebook. I simply added a usb to hdmi cable for a large monitor that worked quite well for many months.

I have since moved and still unpacking things so have not reset it back up but it worked for me...

I have two of these:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

and the drivers are from here:

https://www.synaptics.com/products/d...hics/downloads

Works great in Windows 10 and Linux.

You can find these on Ebay for pennies on the dollar:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/174230119506

These were originally $300 or so items from back in the day before thunderbolt and connecting multiple displays to a laptop. Someone found an old warehouse full of them or something.

Still supported. Displaylink drivers are still a thing and they have versions for current OS's and even Windows.

Thanks. Have you noticed any performance hit over traditional video cards?

Sorry I didn't see your reply till just now.

When you mention performance, we'd have to talk about the situation. I use the USB video interfaces only when using Reaper. The two USB monitors are the Media Explorer (1) and mastering plugins (2). I run the project video off the HDMI port.

While I did test video playback over USB, and it seemed to hold up just fine, it's not my default option.

Having the two USB monitors, an HDMI monitor and the laptop's built-in monitor all going at once does not impact Reaper in the slightest. I hope that helps.

I haven't tested it, but I don't think you'll want to pay a 1st person shooter off a USB monitor. I suspect the frame rate won't be high enough.

No worries. Thanks for getting back to me. I've had it running for a while now and it seems to be ok.

Cheers

Not specifically that or a similar model but I've been using a Toshiba Dynadock since '13 or '14.
I run 2x 1080 monitors from it. It's a USB3 unit and it works perfectly with my laptop.
I'd say a USB to HDMI interface is a great way of adding a monitor.

It is.

I would add that if you're on Linux, make sure the interface is Displaylink compatible.

Here in 2022 you'd just daisy chain monitors off thunderbolt. For an older machine though this can be a slick solution. Especially not having to pay the original retail $$$ price!
