I apologize in advance for my wall of text lol:
I just spent the last several days unboxing my very first audio interface(Focusrite Scarlett Solo pack that comes with stereo headphones and a mic) and installing the Reaper DAW, getting a pair of M-Audio stereo monitors, hooking it all up, watching lots of tutorial videos to get some basics down, asking a bunch of questions on this forum, etc.
And thanks to figuring out that I don't even need to start Reaper in order to get just a plain, clean sound out of the monitors, I'm finally ready to start my very first art project when it comes to music.
Here's my plan and would welcome any advice ya'all would have to offer. I'm a big fan of brutal, honest, constructive criticism so feel free to criticize away.
Here's the plan:
Step One:
For exactly 666 days, Record up to 60 seconds, or maybe two minutes of what I'm capable of on guitar by simply plugging my guitar into my audio interface, not even booting up Reaper, just using the clean sound I'll be hearing out of my studio monitors until I develop the capability to actually play a song(right now I only know a couple dexterity exercises and a few zombie chords). once I can actually play a song, I'll then use reaper to record the music instead of my phone and will be throwing in affects such as overdrive, distortion, etc.
I plan to just record the sound/video from my iphone 8+ on a stand I have for it until I have enough money saved up a few months from now to get a camera, learn how to edit video, and do the thing where folks sync up camera footage to recorded music in Reaper.
Step Two:
By the time I'm ready to record both my 1-2 minute noobish, awful performances through a real camera(and not my iphone) and through daw and make a halfway decent youtube video, I should have the ability to play at least one song all the way through. Because of the epic proverbial mountain I'm climbing of "learning to play an instrument" while at the same time "learning to use reaper and video editing stuff", I plan to learn to play "it's a long way to the top" by ACDC as my first song.
Step Three:
Note: I will not upload "anything" to youtube until after day 666. But as the days go by and I'm learning more songs along with whatever stuff I'll be learning through this website(
https://www.justinguitar.com/site-ma...sson-structure). So this is going to result in a compilation of very short 1-2 minute videos of me playing stuff I've learned from that website and various metal songs from different bands I like.
I will store each video in a separate file on my PC with the file's label being the "date" I recorded that short video. It's only after day 666, I'll combine them all in one music video.
Step Four:
On day 666, I'll play "It's a long way to the top" by ACDC again as my final song, all the way through AGAIN. And I plan it to be a split music video where it'll show me playing two different video/audio recordings(one me playing lead, the other playing rhythm)
The idea is that how I'll play that song on day 666 will be MUCH BETTER than when I record myself playing it for the first time. And it'll be kind of an artistic metaphor of showing what happens when you practice your guitar for 666 days straight, what kind of progress one can make.
I've never done anything like this before and I spent close to 1,000 bucks getting ready to start this art project(getting the audio interface, cables, studio monitors, got an electric guitar AND an acoustic guitar because I want to be equally experienced on both types of guitars, etc.)
And now I feel I'm finally ready to begin. *Queue Ola clapping once in the background* lol
I'm posting this here in newbieland just incase anybody here has got any advice they want to throw my way as I begin the biggest art project I've ever done. Because of the fact that this youtube video will be titled, "666 days of metal", I'm open to suggestions to what specific metal songs or riffs/licks to learn and perform/record during these 666 days. And yes, I know that classic rock and metal are two different genres, and yes, I also know that ACDC is probably classified as classic rock and not metal but ACDC's song "it's a long way to the top" is THE song that 'inspired me' to do this art project in the first place. That's why it'll be my first and last song performed in this art project of mine.
edit: I'm not recording a minute or so video every day anymore but once a week due to it making more sense for me. No need to have several days of videos that don't show anything different in my skill level.
