Default The Couch Sessions: Sorry

I've been organizing and going through this fairly large backlog of partial songs and ideas that I have been cataloging for a few years. While working on those, I accidentally wrote this - so I added to the list of tunes and recorded it over the weekend.

For those who already know I've been producing strictly live performances over the last 24 months... I'm easing back into multi-tracking but still in the mood for simpler vs complex, hence only the acoustic guitar, vocal and a couple harmonies. I hope some of these will comprise a project called the Couch Sessions...

Thank you my friend. It was a sincere apology to anyone I've ever been mean to, so if anyone happens to relate, then I'm happy about that.

Take care.

This is really a great down-to-earth tune!
So very pure, simple and straight from the heart.
Like it a lot!

Damn, nice one. Love that falsetto, kills me ever time dude.

Lemme ax you this: Could you have written that 10 years ago? 5? I suppose I'm referencing the "mellowing" factor of age, though I think of it more as clarifying perhaps.

Excellent song and performance Karbo. Simplicity was definitely the correct path to take with this one, great job. Beautiful acoustic tone you captured. (Cool video also)

The word that comes to mind regarding the song, performance and guitar tone is...honesty.

Awesome song, awesome performance, awesome production.

More of these couch sessions, please!

It's the restraint in the writing, performance and production that really make this work. I could feel all the things you didn't do that would be too tempting for mere mortals!

@Judders:

Thanks and I can truly relate. I think, possibly... last year's stint of the live performance recordings/videos made it easier to keep it simple. I still hear a million things I'd like to do but it's easier to resist than it used to be and... I often find myself propping up not so good songs with too many tracks and mix/production tricks - for better or for worse, the madness must stop. As far as more, I have about 29 more to go but not all are for this project, hope to get maybe 6 or 7 for this particular thing and well, I have to finish writing them.

@Fred:

Good question, probably not because I'd typically grind to a halt trying to be clever, which brings me to a paraphrased quote by Benmont Tench (Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers) that has remained with me ever since I heard him say it...

"Clever is not the same thing as good, clever is from the head, good is from the heart".

Might have to make that my new sig.

To everyone else, a sincere thanks for listening.

This is great! You seem like an awesome dude, Karbo, and your music matches your personality on the forum. You're a pretty good singer and I like the harmonization quite a bit too. Very nice song.

Skillful laid-back performance and video and I particularly liked the guitar work transitioning out of the strummed sections and that subtle long repeat delay you threw in.
Quality!

Easy to imagine other producers working with you on a collection but then things become perhaps needlessly complicated, which you don't want, however it is easy to imagine pieces such as this with the right combinations of session player accompaniment (just for some possible extra, yet subtle embellishments).

Someone noticed the delay, yay! It was supposed to be subtle and not caught by everyone. Reg bigger productions, I'm currently recovering from bigger productions, I kind of grew sick of them... but I also have to other actual bands (one cover and original to be, and one all original) so they sort of cover my bigger production urges for now FWIW. Good point though and it's likely I'll get some of my musician friends involved as these progress. A re-read says you probably didn't mean big production, sorry for the skim read.

@Nait, that was an awful nice thing to say, now I gotta live up to it.

Well, I watched but I didn't listen. And I'm glad you wrote this song for me because you hurt my feelings when you commented but didn't listen to my song.

Damn, dude! This is really good! Nice pickin' on the guitar and the background vocals are stellar! Everything sounds well mixed to me but I'd like to hear the delay just a tad more.

Question: I love the hat and glasses? Can I have 'em?

I loved your song, the only complaint I had was it hurt my feelings a little as to how damn good it sounded, so stop that right now! I was going to do it without hat and glasses but there's a comfort and presentation factor there, I don't mean that as vain hopefully, more like dressing up for dinner.

Brenda Lee did a musical apology (I'm Sorry) a few years back, but her plea couldn't hold a candle to this one. Of course, she was only 15 when she recorded that, and you appear a little more seasoned than that.

Seriously - great job. Fine recording, fine song. I hope you don't add to it - I really like it the way it is.

That's beautiful.

I like your voice, a bit envious actually as my own voice didn't survive the years that well (I guess we're in the same ballpark age-wise) and I have to fight to get a decent performance myself.

Also, the recording of the acoustic guitar shows you know what you're doing.

So more couch sessions please

Thanks sir! I hope to continue with these until I get to at least EP size.

Regarding the voice, I've always battled with it as my range sits in a weird place and I'm not a singer but a person who sings - I also smoked for 25 years and the last 10 of that I couldn't sing two phrases without coughing my head off then losing my voice after 5 minutes (literally) - So after quitting for 6 years now, that doesn't happen anymore and it's a lot of fun to sing and try to get better even when it's not stellar.

Nothing special really, just a Stereo mic (MXL V67Q) about 20" back if I remember, some light EQ and compression:

There must be some reverb on there, too, no? Or does your tracking room sound that good? (If so, I'm envious.)

I really liked your cover of We Just Disagree, btw, and was inspired to learn the song. I see a lot of guys playing it in open E but I like the chord voicings you chose.

Ah yes, there is some reverb there.

Yes, for whatever reason it seemed to sound better (to me with me playing it) with those adjusted "do my own thing" voicings. I was always huge fan of the song from way back when.

Thanks!

Nice variety/attention to vibrato, use of range. Filigree melody reminds me of Layne Staley, detail carries it along. Effective use of switching the topline to the pedal of the oblique Romani harmony at the end. Classic acoustic sound, not overdone. Great job...
