.bak files into a subfolder?
Hello,
in my actual project's folder I have a long list of .bak files and underneath this there is my session file.
Is it possible to have them in a session's subfolder and be saved inside that automatically?
Many thanks.

Yeah I've been running autosaves for my new set up while I work out which things crash Reaper on Mac (turns out... a lot. haha)
I agree that folder management is not a strong suit of reaper.
These autosaves could be grouped into folders, within one master folder, for each day or per session.
Just not useful the way they are currently saved.
Total nitpick but it also irks me to see 'impulses' with a lower case i in my audio files folder.

Is this not it?
Options > Preferences >Project > Save to timestamped file in additional directory so you Just add a folder in your project Directory?
There is a way to get all audio/sample files put into a seperate folder in your project folder which is what I have done but I can't remember how I did it. When I start a new project i have Reaper set up to create a new project folder which I name and include a folder inside it called Audio. I wonder if the same principle can apply to .bak files.

Thanks for the link to the video, very helpful.
I have set up everything and in my preferences i set up a "Reaper session backups" in my Document folder.
That folder is now present inside the Document folder but it keeps saving the .rpp-bak files where the main session is.
Is there any other preference I should change?
Thanks

I've set up that folder to be in my "Documents" folder. The behaviour I have is that when it automatically save the .bak file (every 15 minute, here) it goes into that folder. When I save the session, it automatically create a .bak file in the same folder where the session lives, so I have .bak files in two different destinations.

but, but, but... what we really want is a sub folder, inside the named project folder for bak up's.... I for one don't want to go looking for them in Documents...
I want to open the project folder and be able to select and delete the bak up's I no longer need.

Hmm, I haven't tested lamacchiacostas method as I am happy with what I do now.
But, having them in a completely separate folder may mean they will not get deleted when you use the "Clean current project directory" option...dunno...
I guess I would want the sub to be in the project folder for neatness sake - for neatness read ocd..

RobertP,
I wish there was a method to create a subfolder for the backup like the one for the Audio.
When I create a subfolder in Options - Project - Save to timestamped files...,
all the projects will save the .bak file into that folder. I would like each project to have its own .bak folder.

Yes, a subfolder for backups in the project folder. That's what is needed.
I dread to think how many times a week I clean up excessive bak files in project folders.

Small necroing this thread for a +1 on a relative-path subfolder for backups.
It would be great if we could have just the main rpp, then a folder in the same directory for all types of backups, meaning undo state files, bak files (generated when you hit save manually) and timestamped periodic backups.

This is already a feature in Reaper.Go to Project settings and tick save timestamp file in additional directory. In the space below this type /Backups.Now create a sub folder in the project folder called Backups. All your auto saved as well manually saved backups will now automatically be placed in this folder.

I have explored the backup options but haven’t be able to configure things the way I like to work.
I have uploaded two screenshot. One (filename current.gif) shows the current way that backups are configured. It keeps both the original RPP file and the .rrp-bak file in the same level in the project directory. I don’t love that but I can live with that if I keep only one version of my project in that directory. However, I like to iterate on projects and increment a number in the file name to show the new version. (Actually it’s a combination of an number and some text but showing only a number here to keep it simple). I like to do this in case a project file gets corrupted and no longer opens, or, more importantly so I can take the project in pretty different directions and very easily revert back to a point at which I branched off.
What I would like is show in the second screenshot (entitled "desired"). This is something I did manually. Two things are important to me here:
1. The backups are in a sub folder in the project directory leaving only the .RPP files in the top level with a folder for audio files and a folder for backups.
2. The automatic backups (I have it set for every 10 minutes) overwrite the current backup. So, for my original version of the project there is one backup. For my first iteration (numbered 01) there is another. And for every new iteration there would be one backup.
Is this possible? And if so, what should my settings be. I’ve tried a number of different combinations.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

If you go to Project settings and tick save timestamp file in additional directory. In the space below this type /Backups.Now create a sub folder in the project folder called Backups. All your auto saved as well manually saved backups will now automatically be placed in this folder.
The automatic backups will not overwrite current backup, however.
It is important to untick;Save to timestamped file in project directory.Make sure you tick the box below this;Save to timestamped file in additional directory.

Thank you for your help. I think I've followed your instructions but it doesn't seem to be working. It still saves the backup in the same directory. Attached is a screenshot of my preferences. What did I miss? (Working in macOS Big Sur, fwiw).

I would make the path projects/backup so that you can look for it were all the other project files are.

I am on windows, maybe there is a difference in the way that IOS works.
As fare as making the path projects/backup just writing /Backups puts the backups in the relevant project folder.

Looking at your settings I do not have; Look for project media items in project directory before qualified path, ticked. I also do not have; When overwriting project file, rename old project to .rpp-bak, ticked. I not sure ether one should make a difference though.
This is how each project folder looks:

I tried this on IOS and it didn't work, but when I simply removed the "/" and left only the word "Backups" in the field, it auto created a folder and placed the timestamped backup in there. Seems to have worked so far!

From what I can tell, this is the whole thing they’re talking about, and yes it definitely does make a difference. There is currently no way to change where the bak files created by that setting end up. It’s always the project folder. It sure would be nice if we could change it, but we can’t.
