Default Threshold Recording Mode?

How can I use the incoming audio to trigger REAPER into recording?

You could use reagate to send midi on gate open, then map that midi note to start recording (I'd recommend Realearn to accomplish this). I can go into more detail if needed

Thanks!
I don’t really use MIDI at all (Although I’m looking for some way of automating subtle audio shifts using hardware faders and I’m interested in learning about that!) So, really I’m talking about incoming audio starting the recording process.

I used to do this all the time when I first got reaper but now that I’ve returned to it there doesn’t seem to be a threshold function…

Then I can only imagne "Save live output to disk (bounce)..." from File menu, or as Action commands:
File: Save live output to disk (bounce)... (Ctr+Alt+B by default)
File: Save live output to disk (bounce), using the most recent bounce settings

In that dialog it is possible to set threshold with this option:
"Don't save when below {XX} dB for {YYYY} ms"

I shall give that a try…

Nope…no luck that either :-(

It seems daft because there was definitely that option in much earlier more primitive versions of reaper

Are you trying to say that you don't have this option ([i]"Don't save when below {XX} dB for {YYYY} ms[i]") in the "Save live output to disk (bounce)..." or those actions at all???

Because I use Reaper since its v 0.9x and don't think (and I am pretty sure about that) that there was not such thing you write about except in the dialog I meantion.
(Or you had been using some custom script maybe).

I admit it certainly was an old version of Reaper…
I have been away from DAWs for quite awhile now but have far more time on my hands and I used to so I thought I would go back to what I “knew” (!?) but reaper seems to be quite a bit different, now

^^^^ Man, if you think you are sure then there is nothing easier than to download THAT old version. It cost you nothing but either the remembering which version "it was" or just spend some more time to download few older versions and check each one for that function.

all older versions can be downloaded here:
5.x versions: https://www.reaper.fm/download-old.php?ver=5x
4.x versions: https://www.reaper.fm/download-old.php?ver=4x
3.x versions: https://www.reaper.fm/download-old.php?ver=3x
2.x versions: https://www.reaper.fm/download-old.php?ver=2x
1.x versions: https://www.reaper.fm/download-old.php?ver=1x
0.x versions: https://www.reaper.fm/download-old.php?ver=0x

According to your original question, Fergler gave the only answer that is easy to accomplish and straight forward. But I think there might be a misunderstanding. You do not have to dive into "midi stuff" - ReaGate is just an audio gate that opens/closes on a given audio threshold.

So, if there is audio, and it exceeds a certain level of dBs, then the gate opens, and - if you assigned it to do so - can send a midi message. This message can trigger the recording to start.

If your threshold drops below a certain threshold (for some period of time) it can generate just another midi message which will effectively stop the recording.

Hands free recording.
