Klinke MCU and CSI
Do you use either one or the other or are meant to be used in conjunction with each other?

You choose one of them. As far as I know, they cannot be used together.
And I think your options are:
Klinke
DrivenByMoss
&
CSI.
Each one has their advantages. Below are my assessment of these as per my recollection, so please do your research as I may be slightly off or completely wrong in some cases. But this is what I remember:
Klinke - works right out of the box. If I remember correctly, it was developed a while back and is not being worked on. Very little customization and if you have an extender unit, it didn't work with that.
DrivenByMoss - I looked at this about 4 months ago and the guy keeps improving it. It also works out of the box. Has a lot more customization, but it limits that so as not to screw it up. But many people seem to like it. Again, some changes may have been made since I last looked at it and it might work even better than when I tried it. I can't remember exactly what it was, but I do recall a file I was working with it, that when I de-installed it and I opened the Reaper file, it kept giving me an error. It still opened, but somehow it embedded some code into the project file. At least that's my memory of it and it turned me off. This might have been fixed, not sure. Definitely take a look.
CSI - This is the one that I chose. In my opinion it is the most customizable but also the most difficult to wrap your head around. If someone has done a customization with your exact controller model, then you can use their setup and depending on how good they did their work, once you get over the hurdle of installing and installing their config files, it can work out of the box. But if you are trying a controller that hasn't been worked on, you will spend some serious time mapping out all the functions and programming your actions as needed. I still thought it was worth it.
If anyone wants to correct anything I wrote, please feel free as again, I'm just going by memory.

MCU
Stands for Mackie Control Universal, and many units use it as their base and then alter things to fit their design. But you can read more about it here:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_...20and%20Reason.
So, it's not something that you would be using, rather, the methods you described above: Klinke, DrivenByMoss, and CSI can all communicate with controllers that are based on the MCU protocol. Hope that makes sense.

What surface do you have by the way?

I have a Frontier Alphatrack, but I'm considering getting a Behringer Xtouch Compact.

Hmm, never heard of or seen that controller before. if it uses MIDI, then it should work. Try the first video linked below, it really starts from square one and shows how to check the midi info. You'll need that since it's an unknown controller to this community. Looks like a good one though.
I really need to do some updated videos, haha. This was one of my earlier vids and the resolution is just terrible! sorry about that
