Coming from Sonar: Is there a way to zoom to a selection, then undo the zoom?
Good evening! I'm sure this is going to be the first of many posts. I've been an avid Sonar user for many years, even when it was Cakewalk Pro Audio. One feature that I've grown to love (because it's such a productivity booster) is holding down "Z", and selecting a region of the project. It zooms in to the selected region. I can repeat this until I have in view what I care about. When I'm done fiddling, I can then hit "U" to 'u'ndo the zoom. It's one of the coolest Sonar features. Is there an equivalent in Reaper? I found a thread that talks about creating a custom action to combine both horizontal and vertical zoom with one motion, but to "get me back to where I was" is quite nice.
So far, I'm very impressed with what I'm seeing.
Best regards,
-Sean

Welcome to the Reaper forum!
We have a feature request for this already I think
http://forum.cockos.com/showthread.php?t=64281
One thing you can do is use track view screen sets (ctrl+e and the track view tab) to save and recall what you see within a project
Zoom into the time selection by pressing ctrl and the + key
MANY more things you can do, you can go to the actions window (? key) and type "view" in the filter to see more options

reapers ways of zooming in and out can still use some improvement IMHO, but there are many ways to use it even as it is...
One you might like to try is the Navigator window, which you can float or dock....
use both the rt mouse to define a 'marque area' and the left mouse to move it around....
Personsally, as has been said before, I'd much prefer just a marque or magnifying glass tool on the main tcp window... but we got what we got...
I also use the series of dbl clks on the main window's vertical scroll bar to get back out...

SWS extensions include some zoom toggle actions. I use SWS: Toggle zoom to sel items or time sel", but maybe you find another one fitting your needs better. Just type "toggle zoom" into the filter (SWS extensions need to be installed, obviously).
It's not the same as a zoom undo, as there is only one zoom state to revert to, but quite similar. You can zoom in, do your stuff (including further zooms eg via mouse) and finally zoom back out to where you came from originally.

The zooming you see at first is done by hovering the mouse over the item where you want to zoom and roll the mouse wheel.
then i highlight the area i want to zoom and use the SWS extension ( Toggle zoom to sel item(s)+ time sel, minimize other tracks ) mapped to the the "i" key to zoom in fullscreen and back out.
It might not be exactly what you want but it is very handy.
Cheers

looking into this question more, I found yet more ways to make custom actions to zoom right where I want to be on a selected item and the time selection for that item...
zooming back out is a bit more of a problem but I've found a nice custom action for that:
I call it ZOOM OUT ALL:
View: Zoom out horizontal
View: Zoom out vertical
View: Zoom out project
I have that mapped to the F3 for a hotkey and it's great as you can keep hitting or just holding down the F3 until you get to where you want to be.

I made a custom action that makes the mouse wheel zoom in and out to where the cursor is, very happy with this way of working:
