Default First time slicing and dicing takes question

This is my first time slicing and dicing takes and for the most part I think it's going well, except one thing . . .

I make a slice and it doesn't "cut" exactly where I think it needs to (between two words for example), so I drag it over a bit to place it correctly. Now sometimes when I drag the slice point only that one slice moves (good) but sometimes when I drag that slice point it also moves the preceding slice, thus maintaining the overall length of the items between the two slices . . . I get the point in having these two modes of behaviour, but aside from random clicking around (it doesn't seem to matter what's selected and what's not) I can't figure out how I choose which behaviour I execute when I hover over the slice and then drag it. A couple times now I've thought I was only dragging a single slice only to find out later that I was also dragging other preceding slices that were off screen. That threw out all the timing of my comping. I'm sure it's something simple, but so far it's eluding me.

Pretty sure the cursor changes to show you what it's going to grab... ???

Default Ripple editing

Check Ripple editing in the toolbar, it has 3 states: off / edit single per-tack / edit all tracks.

In edit all track state even unselected tracks are affected by edits.

I hover until I get this symbol:

then I drag. And I get both behaviours described above while dragging with this specific symbol . . . sometimes only the slice I'm hovering over is moved, sometimes many of the preceding slices are also moved.

Ripple editing has been disabled the whole time . . . and toggling through its modes doesn't alter the behaviour I'm describing.

It seems that I frequently have to left-click twice in an item (not double-click, but clicking twice) to not have the "multiple slices move" behaviour. The first click on an item (to the immediate left of my newest slice) selects it, but I have no idea what the second click does, but it seems to successfully make it so I can move a single slice without others following suit . . .
