It's a good introduction for beginners like myself, and the stuff is pretty inexpensive. I might grab a beginner kit and see if I can do a nice multipot controller in its own box. Looks like simple fun and I might like it and build more stuff for my mixing setup .

For anything using MIDI have a look at the
Teensy microcontroller. It's an Arduino compatible controller, a 'plugin' for the Arduino IDE called
Teensyduino makes it easy to program. The Teensyduino install comes with several examples for creating MIDI controllers.
The big advantage of the Teensy is that it can present itself as a USB MIDI device (up to 16 virtual ports), see

The Teensy is also more powerful than the Arduino (RAM, CPU speed) making it possible to create more sophisticated devices like
this step sequencer I build.
