Default Plugin to increase volume ?

anyone know of a plugin that I can put on a buss track to increase volume in the region of 24db without changing the audio at all ? I tried using the JS Volume Adjustment plugin and it looked good but it appears to change the audio a bit, I did some tests and it doesn't null when compared to reapers own faders..

what I did to test was take an audio file and lower the track to -6db, deselect checkbox to send to master and then route the track to a second track with JS Volume on it and added 18db in the plugin. I rendered that to file#1.. then I removed the buss track, re ticked the master send and rendered the original track with the volume raised to +12db to file#2..

I expected both rendered files would have been identical if the level added by JS volume didn't change the sound at all.. When I import both files and inverted the phase on one of them they don't null, there are some artefacts which aren't that loud but they are definitely there.. I played around with the max volume slider, raised it fully to provide headroom but got the same result..

Anyone have any ideas on whats happening ? Also any suggestions on other plugins that would work transparently ?

That plugin does nothing but multiply the input by whatever the one slider tells it to and then clip it off at the level the other slider says. The code is simple and works just fine.

But I think it calculates the gain factor from the dB enterered on the slider using the old 2^6 approximation so that matching it to the faders doesn’t actually work. This doesn’t change the sound at all, but the gains aren’t exactly matched, and that tiny difference sneaks through you null test.

Airwindows BitShiftGain, if you only need exactly +-6dB increments

Well, a bit shift is an exact doubling/halving, which IS NOT exactly 6db, which is what I think is happening to the OP. That .02db difference doesn’t make any practical difference until and unless you’re trying to match something perfectly for academic excercises like this.

JS Volume is perfectly transparent. It changes nothing in either frequency response or dynamics as long as you don’t force it to clip.

I suspected the differences with JS plugin may have been a db interpretation thing.. If I use JS plugin should I keep max volume at the highest setting to ensure maximum headroom ?

I'll check out BitShiftGain also. cheers.

I use Bluecat gain plugin for that sort of thing.

As has been said by Ashcat, the "JS Volume Adjustment" plugin is absolutely fine.

I would keep the "Max Volume" slider at 0 dB. This is a protective feature and will clip peak levels that exceed 0 dBFS. Note that clipping will only occur if your levels are too high anyway. With proper gain staging this should never happen.

Setting the slider to its maximul value will disable this protection.

Another simple gain plugin that I like is "GGain" made by GVST.
