Default Setting up ADAT in Reaper

Hi,

I couldn‘t find any thread dealing with this. I have a RME 9632 set up and running flawlessly in Reaper. Now I want to integrate my Behringer ADA8200 Ultragain. Got an optical cable already, but no signals arriving neither in the TotalMix, nor in Reaper.

From what I got, I have to extend the channels in the preferences/audio tab to ADAT 8, which I did. But it seems to me, I maybe left out a step in TotalMix.

And what about the clock sync, does that play any role?

Thanks for help, this is a first for me with ADAT.

Markus

maybe double check that you have the optical cables the right way round, you should be able to see a red light coming from the outs.

yes, clock sync plays a role. you need to set the switch on the back of the ada8200 correctly depending on how you are syncing. there is a setting for this in the 9632 driver control panel also.

are you using it bi-directionally, ie do you have 2 optical cables? In which case you can choose whether you want the ada8200 to be slave or master (with corresponding int or ext sync in the 9632)

or are you using wordclock? then you would need the the 9632 to be the master as the ada8200 only slaves via wordclock, i believe.

also, (i'm not at my computer right now and i dont have a 9632, but other RME stuff which i'm assuming is basically the same) i seem to remember there is an option to set the optical ports to spdif or adat in the RME driver settings. Make sure it's set to adat

Thanks a lot! I’ll try that out.

Right now I‘m only using one cable, but I‘ll get another. It seems, for word clock I would need another RME expansion card.

that simplifies things, as you only have one option.
i'm guessing you are using it for extra inputs? so set the ada8200 as master and the 9632 to external sync

Exactly, it‘s for extra inputs. Thanks for your help!

You either have to clock off the 8200 (clock source on the 9632 to ADAT input) or connect a 2nd ADAT cable from the 9632 to the 8200 to send clock to it and then keep the 9632 as master clock.

There's probably no compromise in the 8200 sample rate clock. Might as well go for easy and 1 cable. But if you want to keep the 9632 as master clock you just need a 2nd cable to the 8200. (Back when all clocks were NOT equal quality and this was an upgrade path, we would choose the better clock even if setup was more complex. More of a moot point nowadays.)

With the old ADA8000 there was a noticeable difference in quality if you clocked it from an external clock. I'm not sure whether that still applies but it is probably best to use it as the master clock and set the RME to clock from the appropriate port.

When I'm not sure what is going on with my RME interfaces I find the global level meter in Digicheck to be very handy. You can instantly see whether you have any signal coming in and it will work at the same time as Reaper.

I have used both the ada8000 and the ADA8200. Both work best with 2 light cables with my hdsp 9652.

You have “an optical cable” ready. Ie; ONE optical cable.

Therefore your signal is Uni directional from ADA8200. Therefore clock must be set to ADA8200 (same as my set up)
