Default Automation Items for Media Items?

@EvilDragon says this feature is already available in Reaper. But I can't find it. Can anybody help me? Is this true or was @EvilDragon wrong.

as far as I know there are not 'automation items' for the envelopes on each item...

but there are automation items for the automation on the track that holds the items...

is there some reason you can't use those?

@hopi Automation Items for Media Items are more flexible and compact. It's easier to move them around, if you arrange a song. I hope in the next Reaper version you can store and reuse Media Item. This would be a huge improvement.

ummm yes and no IMO
the only automation on an item that is not also on track automation is pitch, which can be done other ways...
so let's just say pitch is not part of the question...

then let's say you have whatever items on a track... let's say two copies of a wav files... and you have automation on the track for both items but is is a little diff on each item... let's say automation for vol and pan... a little different for each item...
And you make automation items for all that...

then you can do several things as far as moving stuff...
1- you can move the item and the automation will move with it
2- you can copy the item and the automation will come along with it
3- you can copy any of the automation items to other track items

So I'm not saying having automation items per media item is a bad thing... maybe it will happen someday... but in the meantime what we currently have seems to be pretty easy to use to arrange media items as you wish.

I agree with you, but Automation items can be effectively thought as additional media items so in that mental frameset you can see where this is headed. You simply move them all together and think of them as one entity. There's an option to move envelope together with items on copy and move so when that's turned on you have what you're after. Might check additional automation items options. I personally have underlying envelope bypassed completely and use only automation items. Here are some scripts that help me with envelope editing: https://forum.cockos.com/showthread.php?t=221082

The only negative thing I can think of here is that automations items position and size doesn't always have to respond to that of the media item that it follows but that's a visual thing and with the mentioned option, it should become moot unless you're really eager to have it all visualized nicely (which is always a good think so I agree with your observation and I'm just offering my way of thinking here when using automation - which I do use and sometimes even in huge quantities)

Sometimes it's easier to simply change an angle of thinking and use different mental paradigm then it is to rechange everything. It also makes us practice mindfullness and lets us understand many facets of our egos. You know what they say, mind is a terrible master and a fine servant ;D

I'm with you Breeder... and just to add about the nice neat look and size of things... if we make a time selection of the media item [there's an action for that of course] then create an automation item in that time selection, it comes out the size of the media item.... but I'm sure you know all that... but thought the OP might not...

and that should be OK for most needs, ... of course I can imagine times when the AI might want to be larger than the media item
