The technique is simple.
1. no tremolo or vibrato on the voice(s) (harder thank you think and for some vocalists not possible)
2. 4 tracks of each vocal
3. hard panned
The natural and unpredictable modulation of the human voice is the key. When you put 4 together you get something really rich. This producer refers to wave forms as penises. He insists you must keep your penises consistent. What I did notice was that although he had pitch and level consistency, he had different modulation as he recorded each track. It created something very rich as a whole. Also, he didn't sing along to a guide vocal. When I tried to do that those tracks lacked. Each track must stand on its own and singing to a guide can inhibit your performance (in my experience).
Depending on the note choices you can get Beatles or the Queen classic harmonies. It was amazing to witness.
