Default How to record a MIDI track to another?

How to record from one MIDI track to another?

I have playback of RealGuitar and would like to record the chord patterns to another MIDI track. Both the RealGuitar track and the destination MIDI track meters are active showing the MIDI track is receiving. However, when I press the record button the destination track is empty.

I'd appreciate any help with this, thanks.

You can right click on the TPC (left) and select "duplicate track", or if the midi track is recorded right-click copy/paste to a new track, ... any number of ways...

Thanks for your reply Chip.

Unfortunately that doesn't work as it just copies my chord sequence and not the strumming patterns played by realGuitar.

I need to record the MIDI patterns generated by RealGuitar on playback. The destination MIDI track is armed and the small track meter activity shows it is receiving the playback from RealGuitar. I press Reaper's record button but this just creates an empty MIDI track.

I can verify that ashcat_lt's answer works.

If you're doing that and still getting an empty MIDI item, make sure that RealGuitar is set up to output MIDI. (it's in the "Output" or "Setup" menu in the RealGuitar VSTi -- I forget which)

Thanks ashcat_It.

My MIDI track title lit up and I thought "This is it". But I still ended up with an empty track.

Thanks for replying Lunker.

I checked RealGuitar and I have it set for both audio and MIDI output. I did try changing to just MIDI output but still no luck.

Do you have record monitoring enabled for that track? If not, turn it on and see if that makes a difference.

Try “Apply Track FX (midi output)” on the original midi item (right click it) or a duplicate of it.

I’m a bit worried that you’ll find this plugin isn’t actually taking putting out midi of its strumming pattern. I’m not familiar with that one, but I have Strum and it sure doesn’t. There’s no good reason it should. It’s really about the same as a synth with an arpeggiator and people are often disappointed to find they can’t actually record those arps as midi because they never really are midi.

There are a number of other plugins which will “strum” your midi input, but I’m not personally aware of one that is sort of “guitar voicing aware” the way some of the dedicated synths are.

It does. I occasionally make it play one of the strum/pattern files over a chord, and record the MIDI out so that I can dissect the final result.

I've done it .. I found what it was.

As is the case with so many of these things it was a simple thing .. just one mouse-click.

In my destination track's record options, I had selected "Record input" when I should have selected "Record output - MIDI".

Now it's recording the MIDI perfectly.

Thanks again Chip, Ashcat and Lunker, I really do appreciate your help.
