Default Cockos limiter?

What's a good general purpose limiter, preferably by Cockos or JS?

Nothing super fancy, just something to insert on some of my rather unruly VSTs so I don't blow my ears or speakers.

Thanks!

I know you did not ask for this Peter did you know you can cut off the sound at a specific level in Preferences?
I have mine at +3db
It is not really what you asked for..

JS limiter is decent.

There are quite a few Limiter flavours in the JS folder.

Eventhorizon has a nice flavour. So does MajorTom.

JS: Event Horizon Clipper/Limiter is what I would choose.

I paid for the VST version of Event Horizon a long time ago. It's my go-to when I want an easy-to-use brickwall/comp/softclip. I just like the way it sounds. YMMV.

This slim limiter sounds not good, it doesn't sound at all, it does only limiting.

That one is my goto brick wall peak limiter. I love how transparent it is and how easy it is to set it visually.

Thanks for this! I currently use Fabfilter L2 but always looking for better limiters

If you like the x42 limiter, chances are you'll like ReaLimit too.

If you push that limiter too hard, you can easily hear it reacting. I don't fault the plugin for that since it would be "unintended use" for the plugin's design, but that plugin isn't impervious to having obvious compression sound.

One thing I notice right away is that the x42 peak limiter has a PDC of 64 samples and ReaLimit now has a PDC of 64 samples in low latency mode, so it's all good man!

ReaComp is a great limiter.

Here is one of my personal favorite
settings when using ReaComp
as a brickwall limiter.

This setting works great for mastering
applications (the last plugin in the
mastering effects audio chain).

Plus, it works great on individual tracks also.
No audio/peaks will get past the threshold.

Attack: 0ms.
Release: 0ms.
Ratio: Inf.
Knee: 0dB.
RMS: 0ms.
Threshold: -0.8dB.
Make up gain: off.

I don't use limiters during tracking, so exact PDC of a limiter isn't that important to me.

To use a limiter properly during tracking, you'd have to limit after the FX send and before the Master as well, so it has pros and cons. Can work well if you have some super dynamic drum tracks you want to limit separately from the master to avoid too much limiting on the master track, but other than that I don't see much of a use in limiting separate tracks. Someone had mentioned it's best to limit as early as possible so for drums I could see it being useful if you can limit after the FX send. This would probably be another good use-case for FX containers...

Individual acoustic drum tracks is precisely what I use limiting at the track level for as the last plugin in the chain, making it so the master has less peaky stuff to deal with when limiting at the master level.

I use the JS MGA Limiter for zero-latency limiting on the MONITOR FX chain, to protect my speakers and ears.

For recording any kind of performance, that's what I'd use to minimize latency to zero ASIO/Coreaudio blocks .

Everything else, there's tons of good choices, including ReaLimit now, which is shaping up very well.
