[solved] Mouse Click Relocates Playback Cursor Settings not responding?
Solved: Solution given by Vanhaze. In the Reaper preferences I needed to change the default left click action when pressing on an item. It was set to select item and relocate but now I set it to only select item and not relocate. Thanks for the fix
Hi guys,
I'm trying to prevent my Mouse Left Clicks to always change my playback start position but the Settings I think are related to this feature dont produce the effect I am looking for. NO matter where I click it always relocates.
Is there anything I'm doing wrong? and If yes, how can I stop seeking playback each time I click the Arrange View?
Note that I do apply settings and restart Reaper outside of the gif its only for you
To see what im talking about
EDIT: Thanks to Vanhaze who explained that these settings are related to only when Reaper is in playback mode not on stop mode.
Remaining question: How do we setup Reaper to NOT relocate playback start position when clicking an Item? I want it to stay for example on bar 4 even after I click an item from the arrange view
https://stash.reaper.fm/34146/SeekPlayback.gif
According to the manual it is supposed to work:
Quote:
2.32 Managing the Play Cursor
By default, when a project is playing, pressing Stop (or Spacebar) will stop playback and return the play
cursor to its previous starting position.
Pressing Pause (or Enter) will pause playback
at the current play cursor position.
You can
also specify that the play cursor should be
moved when you click on the Time Ruler, an empty area of any track and/or in the empty area below tracks.
These three options can be enabled/disabled in your Seek playback when clicked. (Options, Preferences,
Audio, Seeking settings).

Thanks in advance

difficult to see in your pic, and i'm not sure i follow, but it doesn't look like the track is playing so you are not demonstrating what the problem is? Are you talking about the edit cursor?
edit - also, you're not clicking "apply" in your gif

I did apply. Also restart Reaper to check if it needed a refresh.
Yes the playhead / playback cursor/ edit cursor. Its not supposed to change position everytime I left click because I check the options disabling that. To see clearer please click the url just below the integrated gif. It will be full screen
Thanks for your reply

i could be wrong, but my understanding is that playback seeking works on the playhead only, not the edit cursor. In the vid, it looks like you are just moving the edit cursor around while the track isn't playing. apologies if i'm not seeing what i'm supposed to?

No problem thanks for checking.
Its prolly cause its not the default theme but it really is the playhead. Clicking relocates where audio will start the next time I press play.
Where is the setting to not move playback cursor when you click on an item? And why is the settings not applying even after choosing the option check boxes Apply and Reaper restart?

I am not sure i fully understand you but i give it a try:
a) Those SEEK settings you are changing in Preferences apply only to how Reaper behaves when Reaper is in PLAY mode.
So "Seeking" has nothing to do with when Reaper is in Stop mode.
and those SEEK settings are therefore not applicable for Reaper's Stop mode.
b) No, you are not changing the the position of the Play Cursor in your gif.
You are changing the position of the Edit Cursor.
The Play Cursor in Reaper is just the vertical line moving to the right, that you only see when Reaper is in Play mode.
Hope this helps you.

Ah yeah! Thanks, makes perfect sense.
I think that we just use different word but the main point is that I dont want the playback start position to change each time I click on an audio item. I'd want it to change when I click the Ruler or an empty space but not an Item. This is to mix from a common starting point to listen back and forth after modifications
Do you know where the setting is to prevent relocating playback position start when clicking on an item? Been looking for that.
Edited main post following your clarifications

I dont want the playback start position to change each time I click on an audio item
- Check Preferences > Mouse modifiers, context media item > left click.
Here, choose a Behaviour that doesn't incorporate "move edit cursor".

Hello, question about this (sorry to hijack!)
This issue has bothered me for months so it's good to see an easy fix. However, if I change the mouse modifier as explained, will I then lose the ability to click an item and split the item at that position (default key S)?

Hmm if I understand well in some ways yes it will stop moving the cursor to where you click ON the item. So if your split action depends on the cursor position you will need to click just above or bellow the item. Or any how you want to relocate te play cursor. Then split from there
I personnally made my.split like im used to in Cubase. I hold Alt then click anywhere on the item to split it where I just clicked.
Edit: Vanhaze is showing this in more details below

Yes, you will loose that ability.
What you could do, after having an Item leftclicked, to select it, is use the Action:
Item: Split item under mouse cursor
This Action will split the selected Item at mouse position.
There is an catch though:
If you have Snap enabled, the split will not be at exact mouse pointer position but
will be at the closest visible Gridline to the mouse position.
I assume you don't want this behaviour
Therefore, you could use this Custom Action, which splits at exact mouse position:
Snapping: Disable snap
Item: Split item under mouse cursor
