Default Any ideas for a grainy vintage look?

I searched and didn't find anything. I was thinking of adding some oldish clips in a video but they look too new. Any ideas?

Thanks for any help!

If you're looking for Old BW silent movie style, I did just that a couple of weeks ago for my daughter's school project. Here is a possible recipe:

1) set project frame rate to 24fps (optional)
2) colorize filter with saturation at 0 on your source
2.1) add a tiny bit of low quality blur for realism
3) overlay:image some "dusty film" film footage with low opacity on top of your main source
4) you might also want to add some image instability with tiny random fluctuation of position on your main source (basic helper: track opacity zoom pan)

have fun!

p.s. there are also old VHS effect in the thread " Links to additional Video processor presets" at the top of this forum

You can probably find some transparent overlays on YT. Here's one for VHS for example:

I think all you need to do put it on a track above the video track, add the video processor to FX on that track, then use one of the ChromaKey presets - except I don't know how to set it use black instead of green or blue as the color to make transparent. If someone can help with that or another method, you're all set.

In the school project I mentioned earlier, I used an experimental preset that I made to transform any image/video into an alpha transparency filter based on contrast. This filter is not ready for prime time though. There are other transparency filters already available in the "additional preset" thread.

But if you want to stick to stock presets, you have 3 options:

1) use a "transparent" (a.k.a. alpha) old film overlay video with the overlay:image preset. This is the best solution but usually you have to pay for these.

2) If the overlay is not transparent, use again the "overlay:image" preset with low opacity but you will most likely need to increase the contrast and possibly invert colors of the overlay.

3) Chromakey filter: the overlay needs to be transformed into green or blue. You can achieve that with a colorise filter.

good luck

Maybe using Multiply blending mode will do the trick?

Good point, screen blending mode would do it.

It's kind of pricey, but if you want very realistic grain check out Cinegrain. You can overlay it as a layer and adjust the transparency as mentioned above. Most grain overlays are too uniform to be realistic; Cinegrain is scanned from real film grain, which varies across the frame.

On the Cinegrain.com website, look for "texture" and you'll see the grains there. As I warned, they're expensive, but could be worth it for some projects; also check out the artifacts if you want things like dirt and scratches, flares, heads and tails leaders, etc. Fun stuff but it costs a lot of money.

Note that these are ProRes files; they should work in Reaper on a Mac (I've never used Reaper for video editing but I know I've imported ProRes videos onto a track in Reaper) but maybe not Windows; you can always transcode them to a different codec if necessary.

0 * x = 0

If the background of the noise is white, it might work. With a black background, you might try mode 19 which is “absolute difference”.

Just in case, I found these free grain overlays:

Using it here - 35mm coarse, overlay, opacity 90%:

I don't know what Reaper has for screen blend mode but this is what it looks like with a black background overlay:
