Default Failed Metal

Tried to make a metal song. Turned out to a blues, again, with a metallic touch

Original lame version:

New version with big help from Mark Schuster:

I wasn't crazy about the opening, but when it broke down to the chorus, that got my attention the rest of the way thru. Esp like the panning rhythm guitar on the lead break.

Metal isn't my thing, but you gotta try.
Thanks for listening

That metal is totally okay. The drums could be more into the arrangement, imo, meaning slam away like a mother. Also, I'd put the vox down on the floor with the band, crank the vocal compressor.

(So I got to hear OpIvy too. A rocker indeed.)

the guitars are great! tone, playing - on the mark. LOTs of energy! vocals, love the tone and attitude of your voice! always have..

but, imo, you need to bring the game up on the drums and bass to match your guitars/vox.

some specifics i'm hearing...

the intro needs more from the drums. i get what you're doing, but you need at least a pickup beat on the snare, toms? when the guitars/bass comes in. without it, it sounds too dry, unnatural - not what a real drummer would do. the intro really sets the tone/vibe for the rest of the song for the listener. the addl fills you added helped.

the bass sounds slightly behind in the beat to me. it might just be the tone, i'm not sure without having the project in front of me. what are you using for bass? i think a more defined, sharper bass sound/tone, with getting the bass more inline with the guitars, would help a ton. maybe just shaping the bass tone would do the trick? given the vibe of this song, heavy blues/rock - finding a bass tone that works, and works really well, with the guitars is a must. Think Fender P with a big ole ampeg or bassman in the back!

your voice is perfect for this genre/song Mikael. it makes perfect sense why you write music like this. i think if you try a few of the things above, it would make a big difference. my .02

Thank mschuster.
I know about the drums, but I don't listen to metal and after doing this it's obvious that I don't have the feel for metal drums and bass
My bass is a cheap crappy bass, but that IS playable. Have a precision PU by entwistle put in.
It's my first attempt on metal, doubt if I do another try

I think every metal project I start is a 'fail' by the end

I like your track, it's got a mix of a lot of different post punk and metal influences from the early to mid/late 80s.

Also sounds like you may have accidentally stolen a riff from one of the John Christ era Danzig LPs, which is never a bad thing.

ah, don't give up!! even Metallica had to work to get their sound!

i'd be happy to give the drums a shot, if you want. can't guarantee anything, but i'm willing to give it the old college try! either way, don't stop exploring. it's what makes all this so much fun!

Mikael, do you have a DI for the bass? If so, do mind sending that too?

I'm only listening on tiny little speakers, but the bass sounds cool to me. I like the bass line. Midi drums are nearly always a massive compromise though.
I thought the guitar interplay was really cool. I liked it. I'm gonna put it on again when it's finished!

Hi
Put up a new version. Links in the OP.
This is quite different
Thanks Mark Schuster for:
1) Adding new metal drums.
2) enhanced the arrangement
3) pimped up the bass sound.

I fixed some timing errors in the rythm guitars and added some strings.
Not sure if I loose the loudness war
Any comments appreciated.

I love the song! Honestly, I'd skip the intro, and start the song at 0:24.

That would be a good ole "in yo face, sucka!" kind of intro

The new version with new drums works really well! love the guitar work!
