Default Auto-Save ?

Hi guys,
Could you explain to me the "auto-save" function in Reaper's preferences?

I never had crashing issues with Reaper, and always remember to save quite frequently, but today I just lost around 2 hours of work because Reaper crashed and I forgot to save for 2 hours.

In my options I have "Auto-save every 5 minutes"

I have to admit it's the first time since I've been a Reaper user that I'm working on a project with a Pre-release version (5.90rc2) because of the very handy midi improvements...so maybe something is wrong with it and that's the reason it crashed.

What's the function of the "RPP-bak" file that I always find in the folder I'm working?

Thanks for your help!
All the best

The rpp bak file is hopefully the project you thought you'd lost.

Try to open it.

Oddly enough I have NO RPP-bak file of that particular version that crashed!
I have it of every other version, but not that one...

in your autosave settings you have a time selected but not enabled

You need to either check "Timestamp backup" to go to the project folder, OR "Save to timestamped file in additional directory".

with the latter option reaper will autosave even when the main project is not saved, untitled.

Thank you EpicSounds,

I must admit that it wasn't very clear to me, now I'll select one of those options...

So now I'm even more confused by the RPP-bak file, what's its function ?

Thanks a lot!

that is the project at the state of second last manual save.

new project, add some tracks, save that becomes project.rpp

insert some effects, do some recording etc. save. Now project.rpp is renamed to project.rpp-bak and a new project.rpp is made.

more changes, save again, and the two project files are updated.

Make sense?

It does, thanks, but now I selected "Timestamp backup", saved the project, then waited for half-an hour and no other file appeared in my finder folder...did I do something wrong?

30min of work or just sitting there with no changes since last save?

You're right, I wasn't doing anything, just left it open and went away from the computer.

Now that I tested it in a real world situation I saw the BAK files creating...

How many of these files will be created? is there a way to limit their number so that project folders don't get unnecessarily too big?

And in the event of a crash, should I just open the latest of these .bak files to recover the project?

Thanks again a lot for your precious support! :-)

All the best
