Spitfire Audio : Discover
Has anyone used Discover by Spitfire Audio? If so, how did you find it?
Many Thanks, Ged

Works fine on REAPER and sounds great. If its still free (with a 2 week wait) its a no brainer.
And you don't need Kontakt.

Not only will I have a really good plug-in but I may even be able to delete one or two of the free ones I have "accumulated"! :-)
Thanks, agaian!

Many Thanks for replying to my question!
I've looked at the video that jazzmandan posted and, as you say, it's a really no brainer.
Also, I like the way you mentioned Kontact. Way too many times I have seen something that looked really good only to find that that you need Kontact! No such problem here so I'm getting it!
Thanks again, Ged

Warning:
The BBC Orchestra was handed out free, however, that was just to get you hooked. Now the next release comes along and you have to pay. But here is the kicker, it is only 29USD!
Guy is back showing what this is all about. (By the way, 4100 views in 4 hours. And you thought no one was using this stuff grin)

...got to get my fix and pick up the Cinematic percussion...

My problem is that I don't find it ( :
I use Ubuntu, I have Discover installed with Wine (no idea on how to do it differently) and while, for a split second, Reaper claims to have found it, it doesn't show anywhere in the instruments or plugins.
So, I didn't find it ( : but I'd very much like to.
Since my standards are pretty low, I guess I'll be blown away when I find it.

I notice you've already been on the Linux section of the Forum. That may well provide a solution. One mistake I've made (in Windows) in the past is to install a VSTi and then forget to go into preferences and tell Reaper where to find it.
I hope you get it sorted soon. Good Luck!

I am a guitarist/bassist. I write rock songs, sometimes country songs. I don't write for a symphony orchestra.
But it's great for adding some strings!

I'm a guitarist, too, with one foot firmly in rock and the other one dipping its toes in jazz and electronic music. I don't think I could possibly write for a symphony orchestra but I do like to add strings on occasion and I'm hoping "Discover" will be better than some of the strings VSTi's that I've used in the past.

@DrGed I think it's class.
This https://soundcloud.com/pintspiller/k...t-with-strings is one of the things I've done using it. I had used DSK Strings and DSK Overture but they sounded nothing like what I wanted.

BBCSO Discover sounds great, lots of instrument choice for a cheap/free orchestra. But there are no 'live' samples sets, just 'long' or 'staccato'/'pizzicato' etc.
The step up to Core gives you these but you have to pay for it. It's not expensive as these things go though. And Spitfire give you the price of Discover off the cost of Core (or Pro), even if you got Discover for free.
Which is nice.

It honestly is a no brainer. Just get it, a whole symphonic orchestra there. The sounds are great, the load is very tiny, and some woodwinds (the piccolo is just wow) are amazing. There really is nothing like it anywhere from any suppliers with this quality and price.
Ofcourse there are some drawbacks as to different 'styles' and so on and on, but it is perfectly compatible with the core and full version. You can even make a mockup with the discovery on a tablet, or a small notebook, then put it in your 'main machine', and you can adjust using the core or the full BBCSO version.

Thanks for your reply. I think expense is relative and you're right when say that Core is relatively inexpensive. For the same price you'd get a decent guitar so, yes, I don't think it's too bad at all.

Thanks for your reply. I did get it and it should be sent in about a week's time. Everything people have said about it has been very positive and I'm looking forward to using it.
Btw, I listened to your piece "Orion". I really like it : it's great!

I looked at the video and got a certain way through and thought "Hang on, is this REALLY the free one?" I had to check to convince myself it was!
I can't wait for it to arrive.

Sounds great.
But it has crashed my whole PC on reaper twice now. Had to hard reboot the machine.
Don't know what's up with that. Anyone else have any problems?

That is very weird indeed, no problems whatsoever here. Maybe reinstall it?

It might be a combination of Spitfire and Ozone8 since that's what caused the latest crash. I'm so tired of debugging. It's like my whole life. Always something wrong and ok let's try to figure out what it is this time. Reinstall this, reinstall that, reboot, turn these off, safe mode, this and that and 16 hours later nobody knows what's wrong. Just so... very... very... tired.
Sorry for the rant. I'd just prefer it if things just worked for a change. But I guess that's never going to happen. ;-)

UPDATE
After the waiting period of two weeks, Spitfire Audio duly emailed me the necessary links etc to get Discover. Unfortunately, it went into my junk mail folder and I didn't see it for five days!
Anyway, this morning I downloaded and installed it. It went as smoothly as any installation I've ever done and although I've only had it on my computer for just a matter of hours I'd say it was "so far, so good".

Have you contacted Spitfire Audio? When I asked them questions about Discover they answered my emails in good time.

It's fine, if it's all you've got and you got it for free. But it's really only a decent product. If you're looking for a low cost orchestra, get Amadeus Symphonic Orchestra.

If you intend to use all the instruments it will be very demanding on RAM and CPU.
What's the specs of your computer?
