Default How to extract parts of a song such as vocals?

Hi guys,

I've come across alot of backing tracks that have taken the full song and just taken the unwanted parts out etc...

This is an example I'm talking about:

http://www.guitarbackingtrack.com/pl...than_words.htm

The guitar has been removed, but the original vocals are still there.

Is this possible with all songs? How do you go about doing this? I would love to be able to take original songs from Guns and Roses for example and remove Slash's guitar so I could use it as a backing track.

I know you could EQ it. Is there a place where you can download/buy the original DAW file so you can manually remove tracks?

Any ideas?

Thanks

Short answer is you can't do this with current technology.

Longer answer is that you could try EQ but this would probably have adverse effects on the other sounds. If the instrument you want is panned into the centre of a stereo mix then it can be somewhat reduced using phase cancellation techniques- see:

It's about vocals as they are often panned centrally.

But where could you get the original multitrack version? Not redaily available I would have thought. Probably easier to record your own backing tracks!!!

You might be surprised how much great stuff is out there, if you're prepared to spend some time hunting for it. When record companies starting shipping analogue multitracks out to studios for transfering to digital, an awful lot were leaked onto the net. They make great study tools for aspiring producers.

I'm sure all those downloaded tracks have the artist's blessing...

Edit: yes, I'm being sarcastic!

I'm not sure that I care.... it's not costing the artists anything, is it?
It's usually easy enough to get that sort of thing removed from a website if it bugs them.

Most good backing tracks are made using cover bands that sound exactly like the originals; then they have the control to mute the vocals.
