Default Crackling when sending VST audio to other track FX

When using a VST instrument and sending the audio to another track with FX loaded.
Lots of crackling noise.
-Works fine when loading FX in same VST track
-Works fine when sending Recorded external audio from a track into FX track
-Works fine when sending VST instrument audio out of Reaper and back into reaper on FX track.
Tried various VST instruments and FX with same result.

Have done this in the past with no issues but havent used this recently until now.

Sorry if this was addressed already, couldn't find any similar thread.

Yes I did check that initially thinking the signal was being overdriven because that's what it sounded like. Bit crunching.

I actually think I just sorted it out though. The latency of my ASIO audio device was set to lowest/fastest setting and Reaper showed 2.9ms ASIO.
Raised it up to a higher setting and it seems to have solved the problem.
Currently testing at 4.3ms and so far so good.
I have never had to do this before though except with the Zynaptic Pitchmap.
Wondering if there might be a setting within Reaper prefs to adjust?

Thanks for replying.

Well still present at 4.3ms (to a lesser degree). Testing at 7.2ms.

Strange behavior. I don't have any problems using VST FX and VST instruments in any other config.
