I'm not entirely sure if I know what you mean by separating midi and audio tracks. If you want to keep them on different tracks, you can, but it's a good thing that we're not restricted to keeping them on separate tracks. Imagine you've rendered some midi drums, and have just written some more, in midi, you can whack them both on the same track, and apply the same effects to both. It's nice.
As for writing drums - all you have to do is load up a VSTi drumkit - (EDIT: by clicking on the "FX" button )like ERSDrums, (there's lots online). And you've got what you want, but then probably better sounding than your soundcard's inbuilt midi sounds...
