Default inputs question

my question is not exactly reaper-related. i have built-in mainboard soundcard, with 3 holes - line-in, out, and mic.
its nice, that i can select for example the mic for recording, arm a track in reaper, and add some effects to mic for realtime use. but i want more. i want to record from BOTH line-in and mic, and they to be separated as inputs, and to add them on different channels with different effects. is this possible with my stupid audio?...

scum...
never seen that possible with on board sound.
cos in windows u have to select either mic in or line in....
with on board sound cards.
maybe u dont want to do this cos of the money....
but to record multiple inputs you really need a multi input sound device. maybe try looking around for a used 4 input delta sound card or such device.
some of the new firewire mixers will also let you record multiple inputs.
check the phonic site sometime.
merry xmas....if i win the dam lottery i'll send u a sound card.
all the best.

Manning is right, scum. A standard, stereo sound card (like the one on your motherboard) has a single, 2-channel signal path with 2 input jacks connected to it. The MIC input simply routes the signal thru a mic preamp first.

In other words, you can't connect 2 sources. As soon as you plug something into the MIC input, the LINE IN input is disabled.
