This works great for saved projects but it comes at the cost of not being able to backup unsaved ("untitled") projects when no project directory exists yet.
I sometimes open Reaper and experiment for a few hours before deciding to save a project and in case of a crash it would be bad to lose the work.
This is why I have both the project and and additional directory options active.
I wish it was possible to handle it like with audio recordings: create backups in a default path and once a project is saved move all backups to a subfolder in the project directory called "Backups".
Or if that is not possible at least allow to save to both a subfolder inside the project directory and an "additional" path outside the project directory.
