Reaper's Manual Wiki and Setup Guide
I've set up a Cockos Wiki here for Reaper's documentation:
http://www.cockos.com/wiki/
I've already copied over the keyboard shortcut document that Malcolm wrote.
It's publically writeable, so go crazy and add whatever useful information you want

More seriously, I keep getting the temptation to try to write a manual for Reaper in traditional text form. It's that or fill in my tax return. But apart from the wiki (which seems a bit dormant) does anyone actually already have this in hand?

The "Quick Start Guide" is currently at 28 pages and growing. I hope to have a version of it ready in time for v1.0, at which time it will be copied into the Wiki, but at this stage it's only in draft form.
Feel free to add things to the Wiki in the meantime.

isn't that what our sticky wiki is?
A page where everyone is a proof-reader?

Welcome otto!
Yes, the wiki is coming along nicely. If you run into Jason, be sure and thank him for his work on it.

Unbeliveable!!!
The amount of knowlage at the Wiki!!
I do not post here often but visit many times a day to look for help in what I'm doing.
This is all such a great expierence.
Learning everyday about the digital ways(ol' analog guy myself)
Always afraid to ask too many dumb(greenhorn)questions.

By way of answering a question at KVR I published a link to this page:
http://www.cockos.com/wiki/index.php/Utilizing_Multi-Out_Vsti's
- but that link will not work because of the apostrophe I guess, so maybe we should get rid of that elevated comma...

Im curious to know if anyone is on the case of getting a proper manual/helpfile for reaper together? I know you got the wiki but it seems kinda stagnent in there, if not or there is but not enough manpower around i'll rise to the challenge and run with it

ah ha i see it now, the only reason i queried it was the fact that there's no help file with the installer not that it's a difficult program to understand. other than that having the help tab in the toolbar with a documentation subcategory seems pointless if it doesnt direct to anything.

of course a user guide is great, but we need to have something searchable and a bit lighter than a pdf...
if only we could get some help with the wiki...
sigh...

(with guilty expression) ...
Jason,
My apologies, I did promise to help and I still haven't. These are very busy days right now. In a couple of weeks things should ease up though.
What I'll do then is put aside a half day each week to help with the WIKI, if you like, It's not much I know but if a few people can all commit to say just 3 hours or so a week, that will surely help.
Any other offers?

eccentrica ...
I'm aiming to produce (eventually) a CHM file based on the User Guide. Won't be for a little while though.
Useful as that might be, it can't take the place of a good, comprehensive WIKI - I do agree with Jason that for the Reaper community, getting really on top of the WIKI should be a high priority.
PS meanwhile, ,if you copy the User Guide to your reaper program directory, it will appear on the Reaper Help menu.

Request-
Ok this would be a job of pure insanity (I expect the reply "yah we will get right on that, hold your breath jackass") however I think it wold be cool.
Include in the manual a special glossary of all the menu items in Reaper. Include a brief on what the fuction does and where to ref it in the manual (page and paragraph).
For Ex.
I'm on page 63 in the manual right now. I see the menu I get when I click on the VU meter. It would be cool to go see in a glossary what the heck "Record:Output (mono latency compensated)" is and why I might want to use it and to see other or all menu items as well.
Maybe some day when the full blown public comercial version hit the streets?

I've started a Glossary in The Wiki and will add to it as time and knowledge permit... (might be quite slow then)
Anyone who wants to add definitions, or ask for a definition by just putting the Menu Item/word/phrase they don't understand, please feel free.
It doesn't have an entry for "Record:Output (mono latency compensated)" by the way...
Jason?

From the "My Soundcard Just Doesn't Work - What Do I Do?" section in the ReaperFAQ:
"Once you have it working you can start to install other s/w you need. Test at each stage. Be prepared to go through the whole thing again if something stops your soundcard working."
Don't tell me you guys don't "Ghost" or anything??
With 98SE (98Lite actually) I would keep Ghost images at each step, starting at the point where it was just the base install, then each card, then apps. At full compression (in old Ghost v6) they would only be about 50-100 megs or so each, and just a few minutes to make. Usually only do a couple with 2K/XP, but the main images are still usually within CDR size.
Take Care --> and hang on to that 98 support--->PLEASE! It's perfect for cheap remote multi-tracking rigs.
George

Hey Jidis,
I did that bit, feel free to add a tip about using a Ghost-like utility to make your life easier when "rolling back" to a particular install level.
