Default Midi Interfaces not detected by REAPER

Hello all, I just downloaded the trial version of Reaper and am trying it on my Mac PPC (OS 10.4.11). I can't get to sqare 1 because reaper doesn't "see"/identify my MOTU midi interface (or the midi ins/outs of my digidesign 02R). I go to PREFS > Audio > MIDI devices and unlike the REAPER user guide, no device names appear in the window, just a generic list "Port 1, Port 3 (control)... "enabling" these ports does nothing.
How do I get REAPER to see that I have midi interfaces attached to my MAC?

Is your MIDI interface showing up in the AMS setup on the Mac? How about the DIGI002 in the AMS setup?

Also, the MIDI box HAS TO BE turned on BEFORE booting into REAPER

What midi interface are you using?

Not any more since 3.51. Now there is this action:

Reset all MIDI devices

It works perfectly with my m-audio axiom. I can plug the axiom with reaper running and reaper recognizes it. I create a button "Reset all midi devices" in the main toolbar. It's great
