I'd rather have a 1 column FX browser. I don't often need to see all the running FX at once. if I do need to I guess I can just window float them.

Default Definitely have to be someting like this!

Or Reason style, or Fruity Patcher, or Ableton will be MUCH more helpful than it is now. ++1

In recent years, high-resolution monitor is often used in the DAW machine.
I think rack view option is reasonable choice in 2015.

I also made an instant mock-up. It's my dream.

If the rack view is possible, I expect that rack view will bring advantages to "small VST GUI".

In the current situation, I think "small VST GUI in high-resolution monitor" is just hard to see and troublesome to operation.
If there is enough space on the screen, "smallness" is not so much advantage.
But, if we can stack VST GUIs, smallness become One of the advantages.

This is my dream No. 2.

I want to align vertically long VSTs in a horizontal row. (Api500 rack style arrangement.)

It would be useful even in mere "series connection".
And furthermore, it would be very useful even with the "parallel connection".
This sloppy mock-up is the intention of DIY multi-band compressor which using JS:3-band Splitter and Joiner.

Actually, if we're going to have Rack FX view, it should be an actual effect or option in the Effect Window and have an interface for like 16 Macros . It can be up top.

And these Macros can be mapped to control multiple parameters in the contained effects.

I know this can be kinda done now (with parameter modulation <slaving>), but this approach would be very intuitive in from an "FX Group" perspective.

Programs which have a rack view with 3rd party plugins all use some sort of basic UI for the rack view. Plugin UI varies far too much from plug to plug to have them lined up in any reasonable way in my opinion.

Check bitwig and ableton

Now it comes back to a request I offered previously: A nodal view of fx chains, which would be great for routing (MIDI and Audio Channels).

This way, there could be a standard, visual representation for each fx/plugin. And even have simple sliders for effects that are automated (which could be collapsed/hidden/toggled) (e.g. simple boxes like most Node Views).

There could also be a simple interface for creating macro sliders/knobs for automating multiple effects simultaneously across the various fx in the chain. This interface could be moved around in the window just like the fx, and possibly dockable within the window (top, bottom, and sides).

This could even be expanded later to function like Nirv Agent, offering custom representations of the said rack. (By choosing premade knobs and panels).

it has got to be possible to scale the graphics portion of a gui using a video card. people say its not possible, but it must be possible because i can imagine it.

this would be a great usability improvement. Simply opening all the plugins in the chain with the default reaper GUI, stacked in a scrollable window doesn't even sound like difficult to implement tbh.

Does Cockos read this forum? This request is already almost 8 years old.

They do, but how old a request is doesn't mean how important it is to Cockos to implement it.

Would a possible solution to this be to have a single window routing matrix rather than the per FX splitter that's currently available?

+1 for one window per Track FX window routing matrix. Now it not so easy to use, especially after couple days after setup, when to remember how it was done have to open that matrixes windows for each plugin.

digitalfix, I can build it with Lua if Cockos will implement some solution to encode/decode routing part of base64 plugin data they encoded to track chunk.

Apparently we think alike? X-)

Personally I like the idea of a matrix view. Bias Peak (RIP) had something that did this very .. Can't remember it's name off hand.

+1 for this but didn't I also see a feature request where the FX Window looked a bit like the TCP? I can't seem to find it - or perhaps I was dreaming.

Anyway this would be cool.

Wanna add my +1 to this, I think the ability to have FX Chain "racks" is pretty crucial... the main use cases for me are:

- parallel processing (e.g. NY compression on drums, etc. etc.)

- preserving multiple FX Chains on a track as options to A/B between easily, to enable you to decide between different FX options if you're not sure which way to go with a particular part (think of it as the Takes concept, but applied to FX chains)

- when mixing a song, sometimes you realise a track isn't quite right and you want to start again from scratch - being able to preserve the existing FX chain as "v1" while starting "v2" as a fresh, empty FX chain, and being able to go back to v1 if you can't improve on it.

There is already solution from russian guy Eugen. Well, maybe not so intuitive, but somehow works.

My early alpha solution is already seems complex to code properly speaking about both performance and GUI, I guess for Cockos it also could be hard to implement

It looks like Tracktion Waveform now has a nodal view for its effects.
